Can't believe no one mentioned

Clouds (Dead-O just got his label Channel Zero up, first release already pushing limits and Tail's solo production is just plain amazing)

Desto (big releases coming from Noppa, Ramp and a few others, check out the Blackdown mix and interview thing if ya dun know)

and Silkie 's really on it, man can't miss a thing!

Guido is coming hard (also the whole Purple Trinity is LARGE!)

Pinch... true entrepreneur, always!

HELL YEAHHH! :D  been waiting for these for ages!

as for the topic itself id have to go with Reso aswell. Being honest i'm not really into dubstep that much. Ive tried and tried again with trying to really enjoy it but most of the music i've listened is just so boring and not innovative enough for me. But Reso's music really does stand out.I think he has really expanded upon what dubstep is, and what you can do with the genre. He's cleverly combined many aspects of other genres and made it sit nicely with what he does.I love the great atmosphere most of his songs have, the complex unpredictable drum patterns, the the apocalyptic synths of his heavy songs...no generic wobble bass, no wobble bass at all for that matter, and how everything is really progressive and changing throughout, and this is the main thing....IT ALL ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE MUSIC. It sounds like a real piece of music with notes that are there to create melody, not just dark dubsteppy minors to sound cool. Good example is TikTak. If you'd switch that glitchy synth with say a saxaphone it would sound like a great jazzy piece.

There are a few others i do think are really bang on quality though, Ranking records crew (last release i enjoyed was Zulu / Living in Darkness, all the new stuffs abit too simple simon for my liking though), most stuff from Urban graffiti, 501, Emalkay (old stuff only such as Explicit, Mecha. I hate 'when i look at you' , so overrated), and Akira Kiteshi mainly for Ming the Merciless which is greaat.

Im sure i will have ALOT of hate over this haha but i honestly couldn't care less it's my opinion yoo.

thoughtful response, and I agree 100%
I think the wave makers are the ones who aren't just using silly mid range wobble for the sake of it. Innovative dubstep bangers should have an expressive, "talking" bass accompanied by equally expressive and organic beat variations -- Reso, to me, is the crowned king because his beats and bass are cohesive and very impressive both technically and musically. I like Excision because his bass sounds like a monster, and he is arguably one of the best bass artists, along with Vista, Twisted and (relative newcomer) Culprate whose tunes are some of my favs of 09.
I think 09 has seen more development in the deeper end of things, with the likes of Desto, Clouds, Synkro, Indigo, Blasta (wicked Argon release), Marina Faib (amazing showcase mix) and the Rankin Records crew . Special nod to Rob Sparx with his 3-4?? labels pushing quality melodic and hard material.
