i love using my C64s as synthesizers. it's true that the waveforms are digital, but they are so overwhelmingly gritty and awesome, it's unbelievable. plus the filter is 100% analog! the tricky thing though is that there are several versions of the SID chip, and each of them has somewhat unique characteristics. the fatso brown C64s come with SID6581 installed, which is my favorite one. it has INSANE waveforms, but the filter was in somewhat of a beta stage back when the chip was released, so it doesn't behave all the time. the newer slim commodores come with SID8581 which has less gritty (still great though) waveforms and a full-on filter. there's also SID6581r4 which has both great waveforms and filters but i have never got ahold of that crazy thing yet.airlabam wrote:I really like C64 type SID synths for warm timbres as well (although that is about as digital as you can get, ironically).
