Now when it comes to Death Metal I just can't stand this whole 'Gore Metal' shit. If you're into then it's all good but there's only so many songs about being raped by zombies and coat hanger abortions that you can hear.

aye, i'm not really into that shite either. death/grind, goregrind, brutal death metal etc just isn't my thing.

If you listen to Black Metal, but you don't know what phase the moon is in, or what wild flowers are blooming then you have failed. It is shocking to me that one could be seriously interested in Black Metal and not be deeply committed to radical ecology. Is Black Metal supposed to be about concrete high rises, suburbs, television, an easy modern existence with access to 4-tracks and corpse paint from the local hot topic? No! The music is about wild forests, unfettered rivers, nature: furious and vengeful. Frankly, I think a good portion of Black Metallers haven't thought too hard about why they are into the music. I remember reading an interview with Garm of Ulver, I think in Michael Moynihan's "Lords of Chaos". Garm just couldn't say enough horrible things about the youthful malcontents who buy the majority of Black Metal records; I tend to agree with him. Black Metal is a fairly easy thing to get into. There is a style, a sound, a set of beliefs - it's all there to be purchased or downloaded with nary a thought of one's own needed to get the whole package. There is deep truth underneath the façade of grim posturing, but one needs to search for it.

Black Metal increasingly can fit the urban setting very nicely actually.

The most effective BM is that which doesn't explicitly have an agenda though.

How ironic I find this thread today. I just experimented with some Two Step blastbeats, as well as using Darkthrone and Necrophagist samples in dubstep. I didn't finish the songs but I got two "sketches" done just so I had the idea in my head "on paper." That's why u may recognize the normal dubstep drum beats are pre-made. If I spent the time meddling with the drums (which is normally a full day) I would have forgotten the "soundfile" playing in my head, and I really was more concerned in getting the bas(s)ics down.

Thx guys. Yeh, I like Darkthrone better than Necrophagist as well, and picked the latter more or less because I like their guitar production and they have so many "stealable" moments in songs. I think Death Metal musical approach works better for Dubstep since the breakdown is easily translated. Darkthrone blackmetal has so much minimalism and trance-like percussive repetition it's made more for shamanic tripping than dancefloor ripping.

Maybe a better approach to that minimal blackmetalstep sound would be closer to Skreams "Trapped in a Dark Bubble." I always thought it was funny that he stated hating BM in an interview, the first Dubstep track I heard was Midnite Req Line, and the flute arp reminded me of old Blackmetal records I used to like - not to mention his stark, foresty album art. Maybe he was being ironic

I'd argue that people are liking the Necrophagist one more cos it has punchier mixing and better structure at the moment. Darkthrone one was more or less rushed cos I was paranoid I'd forget what the two-step blastbeat sounded like to me in my head.

Oh shit, never thought I would hear people talk about black metal here. Always thought the scene was too kvlt to look into other genres other then maybe death or grind. Still, I can't say I'm not partial to some once in a while. Last band I actually saw live was Dead Congregation, who put on the best show I've seen all year. Stopped listening to it for the moment though, concentrating on dubstep atm. I find that both genres are on opposite sides of the spectrum, black metal is more organic and nature focused whilst dubstep is more urban landscapes and conrete jungles. Always wanted to incorporate black metal into dubstep though, maybe have tremolo lfo? The grim & frostbitten urban jungle of decay.
