that and nausicaa definately. they seem to have a more advanced view on morality than any other work made in any media imo

guess this is a bit of a grey area coz anime just means cartoon from a japanese point of view but i prefer to use it as a reference to animation from japan. As it`s so far removed from anything put out in the west using the term anime helps to differentiate during discussions like this...although this opinion is always open to debate.

RickyRicardo, Read or Die is mint init. For anyone that doesn`t know about this one it features a bookworm, kinda geeky secret agent who would risk her life for a book and has the ability to control paper (make it hard as steel/use as a projectile/etc). You gotta love a concept like that.

Parson, big up to urself for the tune. Nice one.

On the mononoke tip i personally am not that big a fan. Don`t get me wrong, i do like it, but for me it`s too similar in narrative and eco friendly theme to Nausicaa, just with better animation, set pieces, etc. In it`s defence, the tree spirit/skull kid things rock.

Wicked City. Classic.
That director made so many quality films/ova`s from the `MANGA Entertainment` era of anime: Cyber City Oedo 808, Monster City, Goku Midnight Eye and of course Ninja Scroll.

Personally thought Hellsing was dry.
Apart from Arucard being cool as fuck the rest of the series didn`t do anything for me. The representation of London was on some jack the ripper ish, the woman who got vampirised was lame and just moaned all the time and despite the whole thing only being 12 eps long it still managed to get tedious.

IMHO best 12 ep anime ever = ELFEN LIED
It. Is. Deep.

Hellsing is awesome, I think they put more detail in Alucards gun than anything else in the series, he is one cool cat though.

Full metal alchemist is awesome too and has one of the catchiest end themes I have ever heard.

Also there is Fist of the north star which is just unbelieveable, the first episode I saw of that a massive fat guy gets some pressure points hit and he implodes, pretty ace.

The studio Ghibli collection are films to behold, Neil Gaimans reworking of Princess Mononke is just brilliant.

and can't forget Dragon Ball Z which is loads of fun, though a little slow at times, but has some excellent comedy moments.

Anybody like the Memories shorts? Stink bomb is my fave of the three, the ska tunes in that are great.

lol, same here. it just impressed me on so many levels (at the age of like 15). thought all the stories were heavy but the middle one with the robot was always the killer for me. same for u?

watched metallic rose and stink bomb, thought both were pretty good but metallic rose had that extra touch of depth. the atmosphere and the eery opera music in the background were heavy.

i love anime tooo much, would take too long to list em all, but as has been said evangelion is amazin, rahxephon also, paranoid agent, gantz is beasting, samurai champloo is killer mainly cos of its sweet hiphop soundtrack, gungrave, heat guy j, gasaraki, to name a few. i got over 100gig a anime on ma pc the now cant get enough wooooooooooo! i tend to prefer the stupidly long series to films dunno why, if it were up to me everything would be made by japanese animators.

See, the thing about the long series is that you can see the writers just blatantly dragging out the storylines, and avoiding a plot resolution. I dunno, to me, that shit just gets frustrating.

DBZ, was the worst offender I thought...b/c you could be right in the middle of a crucial battle, and then they'd cut to an entire episode about Bulma losing her purse, or some stupid shit like that...

DBZ did get dead droll at times but the premise of it is brilliant, I think characters like Vegeta made that series.

Mirrormask is awesome! I hope he does more visual works, his writing is fantastic. There is a tv version of Neverwhere but I don't think it got shown in the UK which is a bit pants.

I am going to have to check out Grave of the fireflies, I missed it when film4 did the Studio Ghibli season. Infact there is tons here that I am in need of seeing.

.
Metallic rose is such a rich interesting story, some of the shorter anime is amazing another i am thinking of right now is blood the last vampire, short but with an amazing plot.

Another interesting anime is Blackjack I think the manga comic was created by the same guy who did astro boy?

Read or die definately sounds worth checking out.

mate dont ask me why but thats what makes it for me, guess its kinda a like a stupidly long build up in a tune, yer just waiting an waiting for it to drop an ye just dont know when it will. but when it does its so much better cos ye had to wait for it so long.

do u know what i completly forget about gantz.. animation was lacking at times but . the story was fucking mad.. disturbing and some what twisted.... shame the tv series ended how it did.. fucking pissed me off but i managed to find all the comics ^^ so its all good.. hmm fist of the north star.. would stay up late on a friday to see the episodes on channel 4 just fucking cool. when he would do his technique and then there be a count down apear on the screen counting down to when his opponent would die truly sick.

pretty good manga i started watchign need to get the remaining episodes is basilisk nice ninja scrool type of manga i recomend it. funni how no one has mentioned guyver.. hmm

lol my most enjoyable manga though happens to be the one about he bed ridden old man who gets put in this hospital bed which takes on a mind of its own and becomes some sort of robot with the mind of his wife..
roujin-z or something.. that and ultimate teacher, legend of the 4 kings dominion tank police lol is ace.. vampire hunter D first pair of breast i saw in a cartoon.. no child will forget the shower scene.. ahh and devil man.

dragon ball was neat when it got to the main fighting but yeah waiting 20 episodes which span 5mins of dragonball z time was ridiculous.. freeza saga.. but it was always sick when that drop occured super saiyan goku level 1 we all cheerished it.

all u dub heads though theres a tune in cowboybebop episode 3(honky tonk women) kicks in around 10mins sick piano and some industrial marakas.. do somethign with it!( put it to parson).

guys, i have shown a shocking amount of neglect to this thread, safe for keeping it going this long.

grand bruv, it`s jokes, you pretty much have the exact same taste as me, lol.
roujin z. an absolute classic. by otomo katsuhiro, the guy that made akira. THIS is what he should be remembered for.
gantz. flawed but still heavy. the concept was boom but just didn`t feel the execution.
basilisk. heavy concept. 2 ninja clans, with every man having some next abilities (a la naruto) set out to kill eachother. shame was the middle part was pretty dry for me. redeemed itself with the last 4 eps though.
you must be reaching the end/finished with the proper naruto storyline, pre filler (around 136 or something?). well, wherever u are, it`s all gangsta!
new eps next month
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclo ... hp?id=7293

many thoughts on dragonball z.
my basic opinion is....although dbz got me into the whole long winded anime series thing, the frieza saga is one of the most unforgivable events in anime history...fitting 5 minutes of story into 5 hours of my life was one of the big wastes of my existence... i forgave it when the android saga came about...then the cell saga came along to waste more of my time...then i forgave it when the buu saga got really good...then the buu saga reached a level of stupidity as bad as the frieza saga.
clearly my opinion is mixed.
luckily i managed to get into the orginal dragonball series after. easily the best of the bunch in terms of story, humour, character and, yes, even action. check it out if u never got round to it, `Z` is weak in comparison.

had an OVA based brainwave on the train the other day.
ORGUSS 02
this is the mother of all OVA`s.
if you haven`t checked it make sure it reaches your list of things to watch.
HEAVY story, decent characters, jokes humour, psychic gally and seeeeriously giant mechs, to name but a few of the plus points.
sound generic but it puts everything together perfectly.
i rate anyone that has seen it.

another area not yet mentioned on this thread is anything by satoshi kon.
perfect blue, tokyo godfathers, millenium actress are all brilliant for me... and there`s a new one i been hearing about called paprika, getting good reviews coming from the festival circuit.
this guy is where it`s at for feature length anime as far as i`m concerned.
perfect blue is a masterpiece.
it`s animation...but it`s a psychological thriller...the fact that it`s animated makes it harder to tell what`s real and what`s a dream...or is it a dream?...tooooo good!
anyone likes?

Ordered the series of Cowboy Beebop the other day (still waiting for it to arrive :( )

Ghost in the shell is obviously badman, gonna get the series (Stand Alone Complex) for my birthday.

Think it was Parson who commented on Grave of Firefiles at the start of the thread, powerful stuff there even though its not to my normal tastes.

Saw Naruto on sky the other day and loved it so Im gonna try and get hold of more of it.

My favourite anime that I have seen recently has got to be "My neighbour Totoro" gonna get that on DVD soon as well

Trying to build up a collection from now on of Anime so any recomendations from you knowledgable lot would be sweet

Bumpitybumpbump.

I figured that as I've seen some amazingly good anime films/series recently and that a motherload of new people have joined the forum I'd resurrect this old donkey.

Anyone seen anything new/fresh/deep/resurrect a classic?

Any new guys wanna bring anything new to table?

Shoot.
