If you think about it, it is just the right wing media segregating young mothers as a moral example at which the rest of society can point and stare. Futher reinforcing the patriarchal society that we live in. The fact is that most young mums don't get a council house or receive very much in the way of benefits, in fact the vast majority (around 95%) of young mums live with their parents, and the child's grandparents are the main carers - this gives the chance of the young mum to finish her schooling or work.

Overall most mums actually have children later in life, this is of course a side effect of women becoming more empowered in the work place and in society as a whole. Most people also seem to think that teenage mums are on the rise, again this is a myth, teenage pregnancy is on the whole on the decline. Also the way that stats are gathered are inaccurate of how many women actually become mums, conception and pregnancy does not equate being a mum, that is media spin. One thing that si true is that we do have the highest rates of teenage pregancy in europe.

Nice post. I do have to disagree with a few points...

First of all, I've actually met quite a few girls in the club, and when we go to her place it turns out she has a kid (this happened 3 times already, actually out of the 4 girls I've had here, 3 were moms). A friend of me caught some girl making holes in his condoms, so seriously, it's out of control here. About the housing/benefits, I don't really know, I did not research this, but based on personal experience... Only one of them had a job, yet they all had their own place and I met them in the club (which is not free either).

You might be right about their grandparents taking care of them, but still the mum gets the monies.

I do think teenage pregnacy is on the rise, or at least it has been on the rise. There is no way that 30 years back girls were having as much babies in their 14~24s as they do now.

Pregnancy is not the same as being a mom. The thing I tried saying though was that in the UK (Greenock based on my experience) lots of girls TRY to be a mom so they get the benefits.

haha firky i live underneath these people trust me...

they dont work...have massive tvs that they ensure are visible from the street....are entirely unsuitable parents...screeching constantly yet never that ive seen using actual discipline to stop their kids becoming evil stnuc by the time theyre in their teens...

on my estate the majority of people are always at home bussin r kelly out da windows...

im sure most estates are similar...they are more than happy sponging and not contributing...

they just shouldnt have a kid if they cant afford to pay for it..its that simple...theyre lazy and this is their motivation in working the system

Oh yeah some people do just want to pop a baby out, sit at home smoking cigarettes and watching TV all day. I don't deny that, I have to grit my teeth and work to 'help' some people who are exactly as you describe but overall that is a very small minority of people. Everything I have read with regards to it (I am doing sociology init) paints a very different picture, a quick google brings up this:

However, as with housing, most young mums have little knowledge of social security policy before getting pregnant.

those are numbers...i only go on my experiences and not hearsay.....on my estate most people dont work...this is clear as they are always here when i have a day off in the week...

not disputing the facts in what youre sayin but this country is fucked....people go out and work increasingly hard given the economic climate and others dont work and sit at home....i have no issue with people on jobseekers as it only lasts 6 months anyway...i take issue with anyone living off the taxpayer even if it a paltry amount they get...they still get it for nothing and are in the situation 9 times out of 10 through willful choice...

i feel like an outsider on my estate as i work and have ethics....

and tbh i always thought it was lazy whites having all the kids....asian culture has the right approach to family values if you ask me...

@ pistons, the problem with being on the dole is that you're less likely to get a job because you're on the dole. The longer you're on the dole the less chance you have to get a dole because people assume you don't want to work. The welfare state can actually stagment social mobility. Yet half the reason this country is still fucked is because of Thatcher's legacy, and partly because New Labour have actually increased the gap between the rich and poor (take a look at the gini coefficient) - catch 22.
