Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
I think it should be judged on technical ability and selection (in that order).Roflrilla wrote:Does best DJ really just require an awesome mixing ability?
Wouldn't people also take into account things such as personality, interactivity with the audience and being a general entertainer?
Same with label and other awards...
Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
Congratulations to all of the winners. There is a lot there that truly deserve their award(s).
On a tangent per these awards, I think there should be prerequisites for next year's awards. Here are a couple of suggestions:
On a tangent per these awards, I think there should be prerequisites for next year's awards. Here are a couple of suggestions:
- 1. User's join date must be before the current year's awards. Example: Users that wish to vote in 2011 awards must have joined before 2010/1/1. This would prevent users from voting on things that happened before they joined the forum.
2. User's post count must be greater than or equal to X. I suggest numbers such as 20, 30, 50, 70, or 100. It could be tiered such that every X posts the user can vote in another category of his or her choice. This would limit the amount of users voting in categories they know nothing about.
"At our dance, no one's watching anyone really. They're just there in their own space having a good time... It's not like an old rave where everyone wants to come and hug you and be your friend. There's no moodiness. Not in our dance... It's just purely sound."

Well, no. Just because you joined the forum in 2009 or 2010 doesn't mean you have no knowledge of the music.EMANCE wrote:Congratulations to all of the winners. There is a lot there that truly deserve their award(s).

Not all Dubstep fans/followers are active on this forum.

Would also some what limit the amount of votes where people use inactive accounts etc.EMANCE wrote:Congratulations to all of the winners. There is a lot there that truly deserve their award(s).

That's your opinion and if you feel they deserve a prize why don't you make it your duty to get one made especially for them?joeki wrote:rediculous idea.

+1 on this... pretty mad. Un-educated votes? Not to put Skream down but Youngsta is the most flawless DJ i've ever heard... the end. True he isn't the most charismatic DJ compared to some others but thats why Toast is there to interact with the crowd. Never mind, he'll always be number one to merliquid wrote:No offence to skream, but how the fuck did he manage to win best dj above n-type and youngsta? They are both on another level compared to him, wtf.

this. but still big ups to Joker...and SWAMP 81 best new label. happy about that, quite surprised Kryptic Minds didn't win anything.........JimmaJamJamie wrote:Youngsta came 5th in best DJ. I am speechless really!

its an awards on an internet forum, on the internet, voted by the internet.
its not the grammys or brits, so lets not go overboard and make prerequisites about something that could never really be that representative of a sound. all it could ever be is a sampling of popularity.

congrats to all the winners and nominees.
Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
I would really like voting to be open next year. I think the main reason people wanted to see the results early was because they assumed the results would be hand picked by someone other than the voters.

Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
harder dubstep is obviously more popular than you would think from reading this forum,Dark Reign wrote:Hibbie wrote:Quite surprised by some of the winners here but also not surprised by some of the other due to big commercial success. Not surprised by Joker getting best producer, I have personally never liked any of Jokers tunes except the odd 1 or 2 but I do appreciate how much of a good producer he is, some of the sounds he makes are are on some level.
Thank god Joy Orbison one best new producer, look at the two below him.
Hyperdub rightfully one best label, that label is a machine but Dub Police and Ruttun? Deep medi far surpasses them 2 labels put together.
Emalkay- when I look at you winning best track................
Not surprised by In for the kill winning best remix
Best album sounds about right all though I wish it were City Limits.
Why is it that for best mix the first and second place winners stand out (Not in a good way)
Well done to MAH, fully deserved but I didn't realise how underrated Jay5 and Antisocial was which is such a shame.
BUT the biggest shock is Juno, wtf Juno is one of the worst, they don't even discount postage on large orders, or they never used to. I suppose Juno would be quite pissed off if they weren't on the list considering they have sponsored these awards.......
You gotta understand that the harder dubstep is really popular and Rottun & Dub Police are 2 of the top labels doing that stuff. When I look at u was hyped and played to death last year same with in for the kill no surprises there.
As for the 2 mixes theyre really good mixes, 16Bit goes from burial to emalkay flawlessly and its a well thougt out and great mix mix, and I was there live when Excision did his shambhala mix adn it still is the best dubstep set Ive witnessed for the harder dubstep it is the best.
but also, votes from people who like harder dubstep were distributed to smaller number of names,
since forum members nominated less names from harder dubstep spectra than from other dubstep.
that could result in higher percentage of votes per name for harder dubstep names.
i was watching the votes all the time, and noticed something unusual for sampling:
after few days the order of names came in equilibrium state and didn't change much,
but after that, toward the end of voting, harder dubstep names were getting more votes than others.

Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
have you listened to the milky pie mix? well deserving of the top spot as it covers the full spectrum of dubstep and is very well mixed, besideswhich, the final 25ish minutes is purely deeper stuff and 2step... dont just go "oh it's 16bit, i bet its nothing but chainsaw wankery and filth" theres some joker, burial, darkstar, pangea and not to mention 16-bits own deep stuff which is actually very lush and well put togetherHibbie wrote:Why is it that for best mix the first and second place winners stand out (Not in a good way)

Just one thing.... Why dont all the catergories have profiles links as all involved deserve the publicity for getting that far?! Its a shame IMO

Yes it is my opinion and I'm allowed to express it surely?Roflrilla wrote:That's your opinion and if you feel they deserve a prize why don't you make it your duty to get one made especially for them?joeki wrote:rediculous idea.

My beef isn't with the awards itself, nore the procedure. I think this is very positive initiative and I respect the efforts from all involved. I am however almost shocked by some of the results. Perhaps this is because some people were forced to vote on things they knew nothing about.
That's why we have perhaps a few shocking results? I can't explain it otherwise. Or perhaps I'm just on the fringes of dubstep tastewise.
The reason why I think that other idea is rediculous was already explained by someone else. I lurked here for 3 years before signing up and was well into dubstep before I even knew this place existed. Not to prove how old school I am (lol, fuck that), but that's just your basic discrimination really.
Some of the results made sense (joy orbison, swamp81, Hyperdub 5 years, 16bit mix..) others were totally weird. Does everyone really think MAH is the best DUBSTEP radio show? It's a good show but not the best dubstep show innit? It's the show everyone knows and perhaps that's why it got so many votes, just to give a concrete example to support my earlier theory.
Re: Dubstepforum Awards 2010 Winners
TBH i've never heard the mix and your right I did assume it would be chainsaw wankery filth, My bad. Going to download now if I can find itparticle-jim wrote:have you listened to the milky pie mix? well deserving of the top spot as it covers the full spectrum of dubstep and is very well mixed, besideswhich, the final 25ish minutes is purely deeper stuff and 2step... dont just go "oh it's 16bit, i bet its nothing but chainsaw wankery and filth" theres some joker, burial, darkstar, pangea and not to mention 16-bits own deep stuff which is actually very lush and well put togetherHibbie wrote:Why is it that for best mix the first and second place winners stand out (Not in a good way)

That isn't a Burial tune in that 16 Bit mix, it's a remix of a Burial tune. Quite a different story if you ask me.
