the way i do it is to cue the track (33 or 45- whatever) and lock it by touching the platter (if its waaay out) before i bring it in... use pitch chasing for the rest, sounds tidier

if you're pitch chasing you can still get that pitch-drag sound if you're way out on your cueing cos you have to whack the pitch up or down quickly, the only decks i been on that have enough torque to compensate that (though its still noticeable) are Stanton T150's, they have stupid torque on them

either way, for minor adjustments pitch chasing is better, and its better for keeping a tune sounding locked if you aint properly got it in yet ie if you're trying to mix it quickly you can keep it sounding 'in' far easier until you lock it

i reckon im still a few months off recording one of my mixes but i will defo do it by summer, ill p;ost it on here, look for feedback, beatmatching is easy really, its the rest that takes the time and practice

This.

But then again, if you're a dj that uses 45's and even an old 78 every now and then, something as subtle as the difference between 33 and 45 is pretty much not existant, unless, as stated before, you're touching the wax and not the pitch while in the mix; that's just bad djing, at any rpm!

you know, i just started mixing and reading this thread makes me feel like i'm doing something right. i spent a while watching other dj's do their thing and saw them all messing with the pitch, so i figured that was the proper way of going about matching, and i've been emulating what they were doing. :t:

I've never noticed the difference either... I wish I could mix using the pitch fader, I jus dab the dots on the platter or speed it up by twisting the bit where the record goes on, not sure on the technical name for it... or using my finger on the label...

really? this is literally the first time i've ever heard anyone notice a difference, tbh. I've grown up in the dance community so i figure i would have heard people talking about this if it were an actual problem...

just as a little tip, when you have it beat matched and you still slightly out of sync (ba-boom instead of BOOM) instead of touching the record or platter or twisting the platter forward to match it up try a big change on the pitch shifter followed by a quick return to where it was.

Either up and then back down to move the new tune faster for a moment

OR

down speed and then back up to slow it down and bring it back in alignment.

Again this is purely when you are matched up speed wise and only marginally out from your release of the new plate. Sometimes it comes from having old decks that are not as good as they used to be or sometimes it comes from just being off but you can beat match and still be marginally out.

Yeah but most people who get it beat matched spoil it all when they get it beat matched and their release isnt in time by rubbing all over the records or playing with the platter. The amount of people who do small changes via the record is astounding.

anyone else have occasional problems with bass sounds clashing and sounding like mud coming through the mixer? I got the kill switches working over time on the highs and lows but with some of the mid range wobblers if you kill the middle its just silence and then sure whats the point?

yeah thats what I am doing but sometimes you are just feeling a tune and then you want something to keep up the energy and im not even expecting

BARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I play a huge range of tunes and its only happened a few times but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and knows a fix other than dont do it. My current one is a quick cut between the two tunes at a break / drop.

yea you can just switch the tunes, but that doesnt fix having tunes that clash harmonically... like, some tunes just dont sound good together

either the drums dont work, or they're in wrong keys so sound shitty together anyway, or they just SOUND shitty together for some other reason

best bet is to just wheel up and start again!

wheeling out when you hear it is something to so alright but I am sure there is a better way.
