I know theres quite a few cats that do multi-genres, and well, I guess Im looking more for multi-tempo stuff. I have yet to ever hear anyone drop dnb and house in the same set, even though there are deffo tracks that would work in that way.

Im really looking for a term, as much as I hate labeling styles of music, that will help me find more dj's doing the multiple tempo thing. I can see using multiple tempos and styles having an amazing effect on a crowd if done right.

Oh and excuse the sloppyness of that mix, like I said I threw it together late night style.

@ Selector.dub.u - good stuff man, Ive already checked a few of your mixes from the station Im digin your stuff. You gonna make it up to the Joe Nice show?
thanks bro. I might try to get down there for joe nice.
still need to peep your mix.
big up for the discussion.

@ Fubar - check the mix I posted, those guys are dope but not really doing what Im talking about...

I appreciate the suggestions and Ive heard of Rupture before as well as Diplo, and a bunch of others along those lines, but part of what Im talking about includes the beatmatched mixing.

@ selector dub u - right on bro, let me know if you're gonna make it, we'll have a beer

@ declipse - Thanks for the heads up on that site, will be checking it for sure. Deffo want to hear that mix with Tom Waits...

What Im looking for though is cats that keep it within the realm of electronic music. Not to take away from what the above mentioned cats are doing, but is there anyone mixing mostly from the main dance music styles? Techno, House, DnB, Dubstep, Breaks etc..?

Another mix like this is one the way from me...

Checking this mix out and quite liking it (good to hear 5 on It again). Seems to work pretty well. Isn't the trick with this looking at the multiples in the beats where you have triplet pulses against quarter notes so you can get those wierd tempo changes (so something at say 90 bpm can be played over something at 135bpm being 50% faster as it the loop will still sync up over the course of 12 bars). Probably have to check the maths, but if you can do that and not make it sound too shocking you could probably get away with it.

Remember years ago that Andy Weatherall did something quite similar (not quite to these standards but this was with just decks). Was mixing ambient into techno into dub into jungle (proper 94 stylee) from what I can remember pretty damn well. With loads of minimal techno (and gabba thinking about it) because 16 bars aren't really marked off so obviously as in other genres, it's easier to turn the bass drum from 4/4 in one signature to hitting dotted half notes or whatever into another tune.

I think a lot of maths and dedication is going to be required. This is a wicked mix though, so think you're on your way :D
Hmm....

@ shonky - thanks about the mix, when I get a better one itll flow a little better. Glad you like it. Oh, and it was done with vinyl*. On this mix I didnt do any of the math-tripplet-division type stuff, cause I havent sat and done the math needed yet. The one that I know for sure, that the rest of the math could be based on is 180BPM triplets = 135BPM quarter notes, but Im unsure of where they line back up. I think it is every 12 bars.

* Mix done with Serato, no pre-edits. This mix could have been done on CDJ's or Numark TTX or any other turntable with more than 16%+/- pitch control, but the master key/tempo lock is 1000 times better on Serato.

so you're really trying to define a genre that isn't really a genre at all? check out some mixes from surgeon. he plays mostly techno but will throw in a skream track, a vex'd track, source direct at 33 and such. tom middleton and mark pritchard are also very good at what you're trying to get at. i think the best thing is just to call it "eclectic" (kind what it really is) and be done with it.

Im not really trying to define a genre, just trying to get a name for the style of spinning multiple electronic genres and multiple tempos so that I can see if there are other djs out there doing the same thing.

Im not really looking for the cats that do it based on hip hop, funk or soul, rnb or broken beat jazzy type stuff. Not to discredit them or take away from some of the amazing mixes Ive heard along those lines. Z-trip, Cut Chemist, Ripley, Diplo, and all the others mentioned may touch electronic styles, but none of them specialize in electronic 'dance' music styles. (I know all the styles I just mentioned are 'dance' music too, but you know what I mean...)

Im more looking for someone else who spins say house, breaks and dnb all in the same set, blended and beatmatched. The focus of what Im looking for is electronic styles and multiple tempos, mixed fluidly. In all the mixes that have been suggested no one has mentioned a dj that does that, and if they do its usually one main genre with a few records from another style.

I hate labels and would just call it eclectic, but if you google 'eclectic dj' you're gonna get the above mentioned artists if anything.

Maybe there is no one else doing it, and if thats the case I found a niche. But, just as I refuse to believe were alone in the universe, I refuse to believe that Im the only dj in the world who wants to spin/hear a set comprised of all the various styles of electronic music.

And for the record, it is possible to do a mix of all vinyl and get from 127bpm to 178bpm and back beatmatched and blended, you just gotta have the right records and a few tricks.

Please go back and read the whole post, you're kinda missing the point.

Im not trying to name the style, Im wondering if there already is a name so that I can find more people doing the same thing.

I saw some guys called the McMash Clan last year who would probably fit in with your description. 3 guys, 4 decks, 2 mixers. Played Techno through Dubstep through DnB and Gabba then down again. Lots of double drops, accapellas, scratching and other such turntable antics. No Serato buisness either. Don't know if they record mixes, but it was pretty awesome in a rave.
They'll doubtless have a myspace or something.
