and people moan about DMZ costing ridiculous amounts.

btw, if you dig you never know what you might find, about 2 months ago Tormentosa, a distro in the states, was selling copies of the orig betrayed in the octogon tape for 7 bucks. The joke was that at exactly the same time, there was an OH-SNAP-OOP-RARE-GET-IT-OR-FORGET-IT type sale on eBay, same tape, that sold for like $60. Lol'd at that one. And as we all know, discogs prices are not to be taken too seriously, the dude selling the OPN record for 100 pounds is nuts.

a lot of this stuff can be very overrated because the limitedness of releases may lead people to confuse that for quality

the new emeralds and OPN are alright but theres a fantastic album by rene hell called porcelain opera and its a similar synth vibe but not as pretentious

tbh, I find that to be a lot more the case for dubstep and dance music in general, the hype machine in these areas can be totally ridiculous (a la boomkat)... these boards are no exception. In my experience, with the experimental tape scene, I've often found that stuff sells out LONG before anyone has a chance to hype it up

...and anyone who thinks that "rare + inflated ebay/discogs prices = quality tunes" hasn't been around the block enough times to know better

One of my fave OPN tunes...

just oozing with quality, up there with boards for emotive synth control IMO

Also love his cheeseball "games" related excursions:

...but I'm all cheese inside so fuck it, love goes out.

Like some of P.A.R.A.s stuff...

....and a taste of Ferarro excess

boomkat mostly hypes up the stuff because they distribute it, and i think all the hype they give is justified, unlike say pitchfork who just big up all these shit bands

and what i mean by the limited thing is that when theres only like 200 copies of a record it makes you want it more, know what i mean? it kind of detracts from the music, but anyway at the end of the music coming out on digitalis and type is really doing it for me right now and im buying all the releases as best as i can.

need to get that kevin drumm reissue and the ben frost LP too, really love the dark ambient stuff. from last year, anduin - abandoned in sleep, and scott tuma - dandelion were amazing. i listened to thomas koner - nunatak today ... in the dark it was really something

also i know good websites (well two) that have a lot of stuff in stock thats sold out on boomkat, theyre pretty obvious but pm me if you're looking for anything, its just that theres a lot of stuff im yet to buy which are baaarely in stock and im anxious

I'D LIKE TO DECLARE MY LOVE FOR THIS THREAD AND ALL ITS PARTICIPANTS

Been trying to break into the noise/drone/ambient sound for a while, still pretty much in the dark but willing to learn. Currently obsessing over early Coil works (Sickness of Snakes stuff on Nightmare Culture and bits from Gold is The Metal...) and stuff like Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound and Brighter Death Now. Its all pretty aggressive, and the recommendations in this thread certainly seem pretty upbeat, so a change of mood is nice. Also fallen in love with lots of the free jazz stuff coming from the mid 70's in the US and mid 80's in Europe. I tend to dip in and out of genres pretty fast, but ambient drone-y stuff has always been my first love (got into music via BoC and Lustmord). Keep it coming!

imo to experience this music fully it takes a bit of effort on the listeners part, thats kind of the reason i like it so much, with the droney dark ambient stuff, you really need to play it loud and kind of let it take over the room. theres nothing like it really. because if you dont play it loud you'll lose concentration and you just wont notice it anymore, it is kind of challenging like that it doesnt engage you like other music does

i think a good place to start would be ben frost - by the throat, its quite accessible since its got a lot of melodies and stuff

if you want to throw yourself into the deep end check eleh - momentum location , lol

another thing, i dont know if you buy records, but this kind of music sounds 100% better on vinyl to me, ive stopped buying any other kind of music just so i can afford as much of this as i can

Yeah, I hear you man, and I'm right there with you. The psychological factor really does a number on us tune freaks (and our cash flow)--- but can't say there's anything I'd prefer to spend my cash on, honestly.

whoa, seriously? Don't get me wrong, boomkat is a good store, been turned on to a lot of good music, much of it I'd likely never have heard otherwise, but their hype-ups are fucking ridiculous haha, IMO way too much weak stuff gets on their recommendation list... and these days it's even worse than usual, seems about HALF of all the new stuff that comes in gets highlighted as must haves. Cracks me up. That said, noticed a bunch of the write-ups are actually just copies of the promo lit the labels send em with the releases, so obviously it's going to be slanted in those cases. Anyway, got lots of love for boomkat none the less.

Anyone into Demons stuff?

Yes, a man with fantastic taste! (cause we agree haha)

Really dig the Evocations album from '07--- sadly haven't heard a lot of their tunes, hoping to remedy that soon though

Have you bought much from Nate's label AA Records which he puts the Demons stuff out on?

He puts out very bizare hand made releases and a lot of lathe cut records (including a lot of Nate's other stuff like Wolf Eyes and Hatred)

Check em out if you haven't yet.

No doubt, but I find myself reaching for the s/t way more often than the other albums, so much so that I feel like I never really gave the others a fair chance--- shit, I'm going to put that on right now...
