apart from the obvious, such as compression and eq, anything else i could be doing to make it phatter?
I dont even bother pitching them down. I leave them on the default key:/

Whenever I try to pitch them differently and then layer them I get too many issues. What I found works better is LP filter on one and then layer it with something else that fits nice on top.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Makes the beefiest sub ever skeen!
I never understand this tbh

Getting the tail and looping it, how is this different from increasing the attack and decay?

What is the tuner needed for? why not just push the key you want?

Yeah I tried to do summat liek that before but couldn't really pull it off, like tried to take 909 toms from the logic drum kit, and layer it with long release sine waves from the ES2 but yeah didn't sound that good lol.

Yeahh they are well beefy!
Just checked his tracks and I think they sound like dry 808s with nothing done to them at all. Some of his tracks have different hits layered over but the 808 is just dry, low mixed.

i generally compress the fuck out of it with a nice valve-emulating compressor.

then I'll usually do a send to a buss which will have some distortion/saturation, and then bandpass that buss to cut out anything below 100Hz or above 200 - 250 Hz, so you just get the low harmonics :)

Why use the BP and not a LP?

Yeah I dont think you follow.

Your looping one wave cycle from its tail. For example -

. This has nothing to do with attack/decay. This has added stuff to it compared with a straight sine and to me sounds more audible.
The tuner is needed because the kick is a pitch modulated sound, when you loop a cycle it will be out of tune. When you press C you might get an f sharp etc... to tune it in your sampler utilising a tuner plugin as a reference.

I get what you mean with the cycle bit. So the start point may change the tune?

Is that all it is? I thought the 808bd was a sine changing pitch really quick or something.

Yeah thats how it was originally synthesized, its an envelope to pitch kinda affair, and the tail changes pitch slower than the initial attack but still changes quite a lot, so pretty much as you said warever you start to loop that cycle it will be a different pitch each time from different points in its tail, hence the tuning 8)

Now I think of it it makes sense.

Does the pitch change when playing with the ADSR?

Nope!

You can think of it as a synthesizer oscillator, it works in exactly the same way, and you can manipulate it in the same way. Say when you select your waveforms in a synth, all your doing here is loading a waveform into a sampler, which in my case in logic has a synthesis stage built into the sampler (as most do actually)

which sampler is this, cos I have never tried to do any looping of cycles, is it the exs24 or ultrabeat you are talking about, cos I've notice ultrabeat has some synthesis options going on.

In this case its the EXS24, but any modern soft samplers will do!

Why use the BP and not a LP?
so it's easier to control the levels of the 2 components - the higher harmonics are completely separated. Otherwise, everytime you turned up the send amount, you'd have to turn down the sub level on the original channel etc etc. Also, I prefer to leave the very bottom end relatively clean(ish) :)

I've gone into a bit of a weird purist stance lately.

Never do anything to my 808s. Think they're sexy as fuck right outta the box.

Yeah just having decent gain structure letting them sit nicely in the mix and they sound perfect.

On the odd occasion, depending on track, subtly sidechaining the 808 to the rest of the mix can make it pop right through, sorta like Redlight - MDMA but not as extreme obviously.
