I dont really understand IDM is it sposed to be dance music for intelligent people? cos i wouldnt call it IDM but you do have to be pretty open minded to get their music, it would probably sound 'weird' to alot of people. I however fuckin love it! they are one of my favourite production outfits at the moment, and I am eagerly waiting to go get the album, hopefully today!

dude, look at the tracklist to the mix in your sig, judging from that it's pretty obvious that you wouldn't really be into this style of dubstep...

I don't see why it has to be such an analysed issue - everybody knows that genres are only applicable to a very low degree. the fact is that mount kimbie write beautiful songs, with superb production quality, with brilliant arrangement, and that a lot less can be said for a lot of music coming out of the scene at the moment. they're fresh, they're innovative. it's got nothing to do with appealing to IDM heads over dubstep heads. they just put out great music, and the dubstep/bass-driven influences to their music just so happen to make them appealing to a great number of people on this forum, but i'm sure their fan base goes well beyond

Agreed. I can see the link between Scuba and Mount Kimbie but not Hyperdub. Can never imagine Kode 9 signing them. Don't have that 'difference' I think he wants in every new act.
Lovely album and great EPs, a real standout this year.

It's definitely deep, I think I'll get some of his tracks. When I hear dubstep like this I always think it's
easy listening (because of the vibe). But then again when I introduce artists like Kimbie to others I tell them you have to get used to the style (which is not always easy :) ).

Anyway :e:

What is with these shit-stirring threads? It has little to do with the artist whether or not blogs/magazines/boards give them hype, stop trying to tear down great music cuz you don't think it deserves the "hype". Mount Kimbie is a couple kids making soulful dubstep, it's not Rusko trying to be the biggest artist in the world or something (no offense Rusko), so hype really has nothing to do with it. Listen to the album and talk about the music. In my opinion, Crooks and Lovers is a breakthrough album, and I may be wrong, but I don't know of anyone else doing those pitched-up vocals in that way. It's mesmerizing to have someone singing a melody where you can only make out a few syllables. Carbonated is a fuckin dazzler.

Yeah they don't sound like anything I've heard on Hyperdub at all beyond the fact that their music is a little deeper than your average tune. That's like comparing DMZ to Kode9 because neither of them trend towards mid-range basslines.

Side rant: I hate it when fans of certain music pull the "you're not mature enough" card to defend their taste. It's just as bad as "girls like it in the club" or "it's made to be heard on a loud system". I listen to everything from free jazz to psych-rock to Hip-Hop to rare soul records and back. If I find Kimbie to be a little sleepy, it's not because I'm some 15 year old kid hopped up on skittles and redbull while playing X-Box, I just prefer my tunes (even my deep tunes) a little harder. That LHF EP on Keysound is a great example.

not to argue your side rant point too much but in alot of instances that is the case. i consider myself to have some pretty open musical tastes as well , but not everyone does. alot of kids out there have no idea about great music that was before their time and they have trouble understanding musical context.

also those other excuses you gave can be valid as well. sometimes there's a reason why things dont appeal to people other than pure taste

i always thought the DSFers seemed like they were more into the darker side of dubstep and the slighty more obviously dubsteppy stuff, but i am pretty surprised that on the whole most people on here seem fairly unreceptive to the more progressive or borderline stuff. its a great album imo. obviously people are entitled to their opinions and thats cool. i just though that people into progressive electronic music would be all over stuff like this and james blake, etc.

do we have an james holden, nathan fake or four tet fans here?

p.s. please don't say IDM. its a stupider genre name than gorestep. so techno and house and DnB are what? unintelligent dance music?

idm was an embarassing name in the 90's. if you have to think of a name for it then you're not listening properly
