Listened to both... but my vote swings with Basic A

Nowaysj:
Nice track, you seem to have strong themes or motifs, but in my ears lack that something for me. Maybe because i like 'in your face tracks' . Also that stab is far too loud compared to the rest of the track.

BasicA:
The track is nice! Some subtle variety in there which is nice, but the track didn't ' go anywhere ' as nowaysj's track did. Not bad for not using your own samples and making it in headphones in like 30 mins. Respect.

And that last point, i think took it for me. The production quality in basicA's tracks, for me, are at a higher standard, maybe not as musical but sounds better to me.

Big ups to both! :w:

voted noways, that loud stab drove me nuts but i liked his string parts, sorry basic :( - you made a nice bass sound, just didn't do it for me because as depone said it didn't really progress much

I think Basic's track has tighter production, especially for an hour jobbie, but I think nowaysj had more to say with his sounds and a story to tell with his composition. Which, tbh, wins every time for me.

Reminded me a little of John Hopkins actually - you familiar?

Niether of you are pussys I see participation. I can't listen right now as I am on the way to work. I see a's tune works fine for me on iPhone. Speaker on it is not going to do justice though.

I voted for Basic based on production value alone.
I could personally find a spot for both tunes in a set, so out to both of you for that.

had to go with the west saayeed brotherhood on this one.

frank grimes, you need some better material if these would fit in your sets. but for quick efforts, not bad.

I figured I'd give you guys a critique to justify my vote so here goes:

Basic:
Liked the atmosphere here despite it being a fairly sparse track in terms of instrumentation. It's got a dark feel from just the bass and the minimal drums. Also liked the pacing. You emphasized the half time feel well with rests and timing. The 16th note delayed rimshots and other little incidentals helped to keep things interesting. As a few others have said, it lacks progression. I feel like you could have added some more variance or added some more to the drums, although I can understand the minimal drum instrumentation as being an artistic decision.

Nowaysj:
Really liked the tribal feel here. On a second listen today I noticed a melodic approach in the percussion I hadn't noticed last night. Sounds like you put some work into the programming so big up for that. Also the overall production and orchestrations was well done. Things like the panning delay on the snare and pulling things in and out of the mix helped to give the song movement. I think the strings added to the atmosphere of the track but at times sounded too static. A nice multisample library would really do you some good. Also in the middle section where the strings come in I feel the structure is a bit undefinied in places. Some more string variations or fills would help.

Overall I think you both did really well considering the time constraints and forum peer pressure. Good to see something positive and constructive come out of the situation instead of bickering.

I had to choose one so my vote went to:

-q-

:T:

:i:

Nowaysj!!! :1:
The tribal drums and arranging clinched it for me. I feel like you did a good job building up and releasing energy and this gave the track its flow.
Again good job to both contenders. At the time of posting the polls were at a near tie so it's still any man's fight!
Swing! Duck! Groin shot! Groin shot!!!
Blaze it -4.20dB

Damn.... this was a tough one.

Loved the bass in Basic's track, loved the strings in Noways.

Noways tune just edged it for me with the superior progression/musicality.

Ok, adding my vote to the added poll, yeah noways stab put me off alot, was loud and id say a tad overused.
Basics track had a true dubstep vibe, while not much going on in the tune, i didnt get bored.

Props to noways though, using alot of samples and creating melodies like that isnt easy too pull off, so fair play for aiming higher.

MORE TUNE BATTLES PLEASE!

When im off my hols in a few weeks, im well up for a battle.

Yeah this was, but if they are controlled, they can be fun, brilliant for inspiration. Especially if you have never been signed and never had deadlines for tracks.

Remember the "Lowpass VS Baz1manor VS Depone" anyone, that was good fun.
