straight up audio lanes
sampler based drum machine interfaces triggered by midi is just a nice frontend for it and often makes basic things more complicated

Battery does a whole lot more. you can setup macros and triggers for almost everything. it also has a unique pitch modulation I have never seen in any other sampler/drum rack. That and dedicated adsr/adr for each cell and each has its own fx tab like inverters (for phase) saturators, bitcrushers and a pretty hefty comp. It also sports a convolution reverb :o

Its one mean piece of kit, and the latest incarnation update its running extra smooth.

and @ deadly... I would like to see some live editable envelopes or pitch modulation on your audio mate ;)

well.... i use envelopes personally on 70% of all the drum hits i load into it. Trust, once you give it a try you wont be going back.

and the pitch mod you can get some fucking amazing idm type sounds. It split into 3 sections, an immediate pitch, then the middle and the end. Its also got a time-stretch but i dont use it.

All im sayin is give it a damn good thrashing

Its even got choke groups for hats and multi-layers for each cell for gods sake!

Even drum articulations like flam and rolls that are otherwise a bitch to re-create in plain audio or even midi.

Battery is great, but at £79 it's a spot more expensive than Poise.

Tbh, both of these (and Guru) are the only drum options worth considering.

Redrum = meh
Live audio lanes = too much hard work

i was alluding to live envelopes and modulation
i use envelopes and pitch shifting etc on my drums a bunch, but it's also just a right click or a couple keystrokes or simple mouse drags away, effectively the same thing as battery is doing just with a nice ui to it
besides maybe a ui to it i seriously don't see the advantage, to each their own

When i quoted live, i meant non destructive freely changeable/editable. I know in cubase audio editing can be non destructive, but its gotta be a lot harder to do. Also how do you go about doing this in cubase may i ask? Surely all your doing is fades and or vol automation?.

used em before and if i really wanted to i could just use groove agent one built in for pretty much the same things
as far as how i do it simple right click menus, automation lanes and a quick peruse of the manual will have you going in no time and it's very non destructive as far as the editing

I read a photek interview once (from way back) where he said he sometimes dragged his drums right into his audio lanes rather than using midi.

when I was in college 10+ years ago me and a friend who were in a band got a little magix muisc maker program to record demos into. I think it had some sort of midi synths but the program was so shit it used to crash when we tried to use them, so all you could do basicly was drag audio into the lanes and arrange it by eye/using the grid snaps. It was actually the start of us just forgetting the idea of using intruments at all and just going all out electronic. The struggle to get anything sounding right in that kind of enviroment, esp given how crap the effects were, was immense. But there are aspects of it that worked really well, since Ive had Abelton on here Ive been back on arranging audio in lanes for drums, esp breaks or when Im layering stuff. You cant beat being able to see the transients to line them up etc, little rims that slide into the sound like a tiny pad type shape you can get to peak on the line with that little side in infront of the marker etc, I find it a lot more natural to me than midi. You can do all that in midi but its easier being able to see what you are doing.

For dubstep in 95% midi still though, with an NNXT, always the XT. The other 5% is done by eye in ableton, bounce, then put in the XT :D

I would think so. Hasnt ultrabeat got about 3/4 times as many slots, oscilators etc? Thats the drum thing in logic right? If so Id say just about every unit in logic is better than its Reason counterpart tbh. Not really dig into its sampler mind you. You cant beat a proper sampler for drums imo, I dont like any of these little drum machines for the way I work in midi.

when i midi my drums, it normally comes in Battery 3 or Kontakt 4. Sometimes ultrabeat for some random percussion.

Oh yeah definitely
the capabilities of ultrabeat are lot greater, redrum is pretty basic and you can suss it out in no time at all.
I just prefer the overall look of redrum, the vintage style, everything in logic looks like a star wars spaceship desk lol, just personal preference for me,
I never use Ultrabeat, havnt in about a year, and the only reason i used it a year ago was because of college.
I do use redrum, but only for little percussion hits etc, my main drum patterns are always audio lanes or battery
