Fair play, but just because sales have gone down or whatever doesn't mean no one uses them anymore. I was just using mala cutting dubs as an example of how vinyl is still very much in use. Anyway, I all think its down to personal preference.pkay wrote:Because it is an industry fact that record player sales have gone down drastically in the past decade. I have thousands upon thousands upon thousands of records.... a vinyl addict.... but over the past few years, even I have come to terms with the fate of vinyl. I interact with tons of djs on a daily bassis. In 2000 every single DJ had a pair of technics. In 2010 maybe 1 in 4 has a pair of technics. That is a massive cut in the industry.
What medium you use has nothing to do with the quality of music you produce or play out, how much you understand dubstep, or any of that shit. Cutting dubs doesn't make you a real dubstep artist or mean you understand dubstep anymore than the next man.

yeah it is, it's just becoming a fact that less and less people are using records. Of course some people still use them but I'd wager my lunch money that there are more dj's that do not use them than do use them.
From a company standpoint it makes sense for them to cease making their product and focus on other areas. A company like Technics wants to focus on the 70% market share not the 30%

I'd gather that 99% of people would be very happy to have acknowledgement that other humans are enjoying their music.fractal wrote:agree with pete, who wants their stuff top of the charts? let those guys be the backstreet boys of dubstep, someone has to!
If a skream track reaches #1 he's a genius, if another artist who is not DSF approved internet hero does they're a sellout. Kind of douchebag doublestandards that has drum and bass playing the 9pm slots these days

I love pop music. Got nothing against people making it big. Just not surprised that one of my favorite dubstep tunes, zomby's diamond & pearls, never charted. Doesn't negate anything anyone else is doing, just means that it's not for everyone and that's ok.
It's called the middle way, neither extreme works for me

yeah but saying someones 'backstreet boys of dubstep" is you assuming someones motives and their authenticity. You said Zomby might not be for everyone, maybe skrillex is not for you? Knowing Zomby, if he hit #1 on beatport it'd take the United Nations to cordon off the area around his big head.fractal wrote:I love pop music. Got nothing against people making it big. Diamonds and Pearls didn't chart because it's appeal isn't as wide based as Skrillex. Skrillex's wide appeal might just be the types of tunes he makes and not so much that he's contrived and is purposely making tunes to pay the rent with.

tried it with beatport for one release , the tune charted in the top ten on beatport but ended up loosing money because of the exclusivity.pkay wrote:
this is what we call 'marketing' and why many artists do initial beatport exclusives. You funnel all your sales to one site to make it chart.
more money to be made using multiple sellers, exclusivity benefits no one really only the hosting site.
Re: A Rant About Dubstep/Beatport/Skrillex/Deadmau5
my own 2 cents:
some of the stuff that charts isn't surprising...it appeals to a wider audience. in a lot of cases that means thats the lowest common denominator, has been for awhile and this is especially the case in 2010. everything else is more of a "cult following" to varying extents.
there was a time when the lines weren't so blurred, especially if you look at a genre like hip-hop. but it's changed obviously.
it sucks balls, but this is 2010 folks. if it's any consolation, the bandwagoning/trend-of-the-moment type shit will eventually fold in on itself, or perhaps separate itself entirely, and it'll exist in it's own beatport/youtube realm or however you wanna put it. i've bought a few tunes of beatport , but thats because i knew exactly what i was looking for from specific artists. i can imagine sitting on there and browsing must be painful.
and i'm gonna check beatport tonight to see whats going on with the downtempo and nu jazz.

But has succeeded with others. I think its a good idea for an album, not a good idea for a single. Also kind of depends on your audience/vinyl/etc
obviously worked for this dude

I like Scary Monsters & Scattah. Both good filth tunes. But he is making more sales because of being in a popular emo band and being on Deadmau5 label. Excision, Datsik & Downlink all make the same style of tune only better IMO but they've never came close to teh sales Skrillex is getting. Most people would agree that his tunes are well produced and hit hard and for what they are they are pretty good.

Wait isn't Skrillex in Suicide Silence?

Again, you misunderstand me. Saying he is the backstreet boys of dubstep is a compliment imo. Their sound was well polished, their producers had skill, and they were purposfully made to attract a large audience. It's weird that you would attach such a negative connotation to that statement of mine. I think the backstreet boys are good, buy jodeci is my shit is all I'm saying, lol.pkay wrote:yeah but saying someones 'backstreet boys of dubstep" is you assuming someones motives and their authenticity. It's also weird that you assume I don't like skrillex when I've never said anything of the sort. Tbh, I have only heard one tune of his, a rmx I think, and that's not enough for me to form an opinion on his stuff...
So tired of these threads... They always begin with the OP saying "I know there are tons of threads about this already, but I'm going to make a new one for us anyways..."

Why does any of this even matter?
The "good" dubstep is still around, it's not hard to find.
Why do people get so uptight when someone starts doing well?
