There's no difference but that's another argument.

DFRNT, I went to your website last night before seeing this post and instantly commented on the design of the site

Big ups to that.

as a design student, I kinda shrugged when seeing rusko's contest.
I agree with your statements, the contest itself is flawed.

Either way rusko will have a logo, kinda interested in seeing what he 'chooses'?

If your time so damn precious that you can't spend 2 hours into making a logo or something, it's not like someone's forcing you to participate! the winner is getting more than a fair pay anyway, and they won't use it anywhere if it's not chosen so they're not really taking a piss on you either. I bet if a professional artist would design it they wouldn't pay any more than 1000 dollars anyway, so it's not really about taking advantage of fanboys.
this is ignorance my friend, good design takes time and practice. And a huge understanding of certain design elements.......

If only the argument was brought out for a different competition rather than Rusko's we might actually see some intelligent responses regarding spec work instead of them all being a defense of his action's. What were you thinking on a dubstep forum?

its a fun design competition to involve fans.

it doesn't claim anywhere that the person who creates the logo is going to equal a proper paid designer. Taking your bathroom example, no one would expect a random person to be as good as a proper plumber. just a novel approach to designing something that at the end of the day isn't really going to affect rusko (unless the logo is a classic schoolboy drawn penis lol). Its not ruskos job to support the design industry is it?

Also to OP you can't complain about someone disagreeing with you. If you say you want to promote discussion and someone else says they don't see the problem then surely there is the discussion you wanted?

brings to mind some of these shady dj competitions that seem to be to fill set times cheaply...
I can see both sides of the argument here, that holding a design competition cheapens what professionals are doing, but at the same time i see someone trying to get their fans to be able to give some input in a kind of giving back to the fans type thing.
Having said that though it's from a design website, not a rusko fansite, so I'm more inclined to agree with the 1st point of view

that's fair. although at least you can still play your non-winning-remix for your friends, or at shows or something. A losing Rusko design just doesn't have that much value. I guess it could still go in one's portfolio.

Isn't this just how every competition works? People invest time and energy into something that they know they likely will not win. One lucky winner will get to see his work get used and receive some extra cash.

It isn't exploitation if people are VOLUNTARILY putting forth their time.

was just about to say the same thing, surely producers spend as much work and effort as designers?

if a designer was a huge rusko fan, i'd imagine the pride of seeing his design as one of his favorite dj's logo would be compensation enough

shit, i'd write mala or zomby a java or c program for free, get at me!! -w-

It's art. If the only way you'd want to share it is with a price tag in some uber "professional" setting, then in a short, do you cuz.

As a Rusko fan i'd be fuckin stoked to draw his logo (not that I could)

yeah that's the thing it can still go into your portfolio which seems to be the same as having it on your soundcloud or playing it in your set.

Hahahahahahahaha

Now onto the topic, I've been asked to design logos for literally next to no money at all. When I was younger, I'd be so happy that someone would want me to design their logo, I'd just do it - no questions asked. Now I'm older, I simply don't accept doing design work for shit money. You'd laugh if you saw how much I would charge!

In my opinion, the only person gaining from this is the actual winner of the competition. Because he/she will then have designed a logo for an established DJ/Producer. The designer can then ask for serious money when approached to do design/logo work by other clients. Again, this comp only benefits the winner, no one else.

I personally would never enter these kind of competitions. Although, I'd like to see the discussion on here if a different DJ/Producer was involved in this comp!

isn't that the point of competitions?

when i enter the gadget show competition and don't win i don't expect any benefit for entering BUT if i entered a remix comp or if i was a designer a logo comp i might learn something during the project. the piece of work even though it didn't win can still be kept for a portfolio unlike my lost £1.50 that goes to the gadget show when i inevitably don't win.

The gadget show doesn't ask you to put time and effort in to your entry and it's not your job to professionally enter competitions. This logo competition is asking for a good amount of effort, an if no effort is put in, it's a loss for everyone involved.
