put on every - and i mean every - channel [except the sub of course] a lowcut varying from 110-150hz, depending on what you are lowcutting.
it can get tricky with the kick. i often prefer to let the kick roll out its deepness and instead i sidechain the sub. but it works the other way too.
why would you need a kick to have a sub if you already have a sub that complements the kick?

anyway: when you lowcut all your shit (even hihats!) you will get so so so much more headroom for the actual sub.
Cause kicks are suposed to well... kick. -w-
I usually lowcut hi hats but never usually the bass because i thought thats where i got most of the body from? When ive tried lowcuting the kick it kinda removes the low end of it and it doesnt sound as powerful?

Have you tried low passing the sub at 75 - 80hz then high passing the kick at 80 - 85hz? That should leave plenty of bottom end oomph in the kick. If you still cant get it to sound right, try a different sample.

You only need to high pass (low cut) the sub at 30 - 40hz to free up some headroom. It doesnt really affect the sound as you cant really hear anything in that frequency range anyway.

Especially the hihats, there's so much shit and mud down there on hihat samples, that doesn't contribute to the sound of them in any way. Just grab a spectrum analyser and have a look-see.
this
but not a look
a look-see
you'll see completely different things.

Ah man, not this "the key of the track = the only note I'm allowed to play" thing again.

Yeah as someone said do nothing with your sub really except play with envelopes, maybe EQ out a bit of the attack if you don't want to do that.
