The ridiculous thing is that in 1987 the American Psychiatric Association (APA) came to the conclusion that the diagnostic label of "schizophrenia" was not an accurate one:

"Despite extensive field testing of the DSM-III diagnostic criteria before their official adoption, experience with them since their publication had revealed , as expected, many instances in which the criteria were not entirely clear, were inconsistent across categories, or even contradictory"

Instead of finally admitting that research in to this specific diagnostic category was futile as there was not enough evidence to support it this quote is from the introduction of the 'revised' DSM-III-R.

There are 15 combinations of symptoms where no two people can be exhibiting the same symptoms yet grouped under the same diagnostic label as 'schizophrenic'! They don't even know properly how anti-psychotic drugs work either and they don't even work on 25% of people, they're generally a massive waste of time and people's lives and money would be better spent on rehabilitation that just locking people away in the first instance

If anything, I think it's overdiagnosed and sort of a waste-bin diagnosis that isn't overly well defined. But I don't believe that 'schizophrenia' is entirely fabricated. Just very, very, very poorly understood as of yet.
