All that really matters is the music, the rest is semantics

Surely you can create something new and it still be dubstep though. It's a broad and progressive genre. Unless you're moving far far away. Then the name post dubstep wouldn't apply either.

magazines and bloggers need clicks and tweets. they want to say they "called it first" before anyone else. by declaring buzzing genres over, they know your emotions will get raised. this tactic is as old as brown bread. the media did the exact same thing to garage, 2step and jungle.

I don't think putting post- before something means anyone considers it finished with. It's more a recognition that there's lots of music around that's influenced by dubstep. Some of that is made by people from the scene, and some from outside it. I could make a 110 bpm track which wouldn't work in a dubstep set but had a bass sound that couldn't have existed before DMZ. It's been influential on all music, even non-electronic music. I don't think post-dubstep is a style of music in itself.
