Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
its all very well going on about dj skill, 3 decks, beat juggling etc, but who actually wants to listen to that crap?
the majority of dj's just fade from one track to the next, imo theres 10x more skill in producing than djing.
and theres all this bollocks about 'playing to the crowd'. people who say this obviously havent been to a big nightclub!

Yeah I know, but just a bit odd saying it doesn't take very much skill when there are obviously some very good dj's out there.RmoniK wrote:you guys calm down, he said he could beatmatch after a weekend, and that's perfectly possible. He didn't say he could do other stuff.

Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
I get a different kind of buzz when I DJ than when I produce. Blending two tracks together in that perfect way is always awesome. I can see how DJs can live off that buzz alone. It's a bummer I can't, and it's a shame they have to produce to get anywhere now.

I've always love how forum heads assume things take no skill, but have never been able to replicate the very sound/activity they cuss down.
Producing Brostep is a classic, but to say dj'ing takes no skill is also a common one. Running a label is another one.
And lol at the sly cuss to Joker's dj'ing skill. I've been lucky to see Joker play many times, including headlining a Sonar stage to a tiny 150 capacity club. And he's killed it multiple times.

I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Na man I don't agree, seen him three times and just... no. Don't think his mixing is good at all, just a bit brutal. Good producer though.pete bubonic wrote:I've always love how forum heads assume things take no skill, but have never been able to replicate the very sound/activity they cuss down.

Not trying to start an argument by the way...
Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
No not really,
but I do hate people who think it takes no skill. It does, really.
Producing is a way to speed up your dj carreer, I think,
cuz sick tunes can get you on mailing lists.

Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
So you think people like EZ, Norman Jay, Frankie Knuckles etc got that good over a weekend?! Get in the real world LOL.
I mean... you're almost an expert, you have virtually nothing more to learn, apart from mixing/ monitoring in a huge club with no booth monitor nearby, mixing perfectly on both 1210s and CDJs (I guarantee if you learned on cdj's mixing mp3s you will look like a twit trying to be cool trying to mix a dodgy vinyl that drifts, even an ok vinyl, or if you attempt to mix on a belt drive turntable!). Oh and also things like having CDJ and mixer effects tricks on lockdown, tune selection, reading the crowd too.
After these comments I will say I can do these things just fine, so not preaching. Don't quite have the 800 effects down perfect but I don't own one, can't afford one, but can use it just fine. Nothing like the feeling when you pull off a wicked mix to a busy crowd, or get a load of people on the floor with a banging tune (plus points if its loads of birds, those points get docked though if the tune is either really gay, really cheesy, or really girly or annoying. It has to be a credible tune

1> You might be able to learn the concept of beatmatching in a weekend, but i find it highly unlikely you completely mastered complex, fader riding mixes in 2 days, you probably learned to mix 143 into 140 or w/e, but throwing down a set of classic hiphop into non-electronic funk (roy ayers, idris muhammed, funk factory, ect.), and keeping the shit locked, your a prodigy if you learned big boy djing overnight like that. Remember it goes way deeper then dubstep dude.
And i know guys whove been spinning edm AMAZINGLY for years who wouldnt even wanna try to juggle and keep it interesting, much less break out the blind alley routine.

production is a way of life bro, if you dont enjoy it then why would you do it? why bust your ass to get good enough to bang out a tune you made thats decent when you can grab fluxs or 16bits remix and look like the man when you drop it to the general population who think production and djing is the same thing? a fake way to live your life but it makes sense right?

DJing is an art much like producing.. Without the producer there wouldn't be DJs and without DJs we wouldn't get our tunes heard in the clubs.. it goes hand in hand.. Think about it...

this. alsodeadly habit wrote:nope i get more pissed at big name djs that make shitty productions and get signed based off of djing though, and producers who get gigs based off their production and suck at djing
gotta respect the djs (good ones) for getting a new sound out there and pushing the limits though. without djs we'd probably just be a bunch of nerds making tunes on our computers with no way and no one to play them live
Re: Anybody else get pissed off at people that only dj?
I think you need to get your ego in check, mate. I also think you're being rather rude to those who are not interested in producing mix but like the dynamics of mixing.LordBid wrote:like really does it take any skill? I learned how to beat-match in like a weekend and after listening to a couple of mixes I more or less knew what to do. I get pissed at this generation of wannabe rock-stars who blow loads of cash on DJ eqipment that don't even make music....
Plenty of DJs out there that do more than just beat match. Also - I'd love to hear you rmix after a weekend of beat matching - guaranteed your mix would sound like shit, even if the beat matching is correct. Sooooo much more to mixing and being a good DJ than just changing tracks - anyone can do that.
Also - if all they want to queue is tune songs - who cares? They're having fun, the crowd is (hopefully) having a good time - who are you to reduce that?

Yes completely pissed off. Why would you go and see a certain DJ if all they play someone else's track? I wrongly assumed you go and see X to see X play there own stuff. Apparently not. You go and see X to see them DJ and nothing else. So why don't you go and see a great/better DJ who will play the hot tracks of the time?
Example:
I like Joker. Do I go and pay money to see Joker? Or do I pay money for a good DJ who will play things like Joker?
DJing is an art and just because your beatmatching don't mean shit. Song choice is everything.
