History of dubstep, When did you join in?855- 8
Re: History of dubstep, When did you join in?855- 8
I remember hearing Skream at like 3 in the morning on some dinky forum somewhere. Didn't think much of it at the time. It wasn't till i heard Reso about two years ago that i re listened to stuff like benga, skream, coki and burial and i was hooked.
Re: History of dubstep, When did you join in?855- 8
I believe it was Burial that I first listened to. I didn't really get it until I started exploring more of what I could find. It clicked in my head at some point right after. That was about late 2008, early 2009.

I started listening to dubstep after hearing kode9 at the Bass Club in jerusalem in 2009. I still listen to kode9, skream, digital mystikz, and the other classics but have moved on to the more garage inspired artists like ramadanman and joy Orbison. Although dub step has achieved mainstream recognition as of late, in my humble opinion the genre has only become more diverse and exciting.

Someone from GetDarker posted a Heny G mix over on DOA in 2009 and from that point on DNB was dead to me.

Thru my brother. Played Cockney Thug when it was hot back in the Fabriclive 37 release days. Needless to say i got hooked and without a proper sub ventured to the more aggy tunes
Got a sub after months and it blew my mind how quickly i switched over from aggy to deep
Loefah's Goat Stare, Skream's The Shining, Distance's V come into mind. Fuck yeah.

i used to post on ukmusic forum in the days when lady sov was on there and chantel fiddy.
appart from big apple records, most of the releasesd came from ammunition (tempa, road, soulja, vehicle)
there was also a dubplate.net where you could hear up coming tracks that would take ages to appear in shops.
bingo beats vol 1 and 2 were also big releases back then.
then it was dubstep alstars vol 1.
i rmeeber a rwd mag article that reviewed the new terms that were emerging from the 'posd-garage' era and they wrote off dubstep! they thought 'sublow' would do better.
also the days of ez playing jon-e-cash 'war' vip.
fwd was monthly on a thursday at plastic people... only about 30 people there.
youngsta played pulse x and premiered judgement and i also remember the premier play of chase and status wise up and learning it was signed to bingo.
heads present in those times where D1, search and destroy, paul rose, distance, plasticman, markone and oris jay (they would come down from up north) and quiet storm... amongst others ofcourse.
i think to see chase and status now, doing so well, is good.

Well I first starting listening to dubstep in 2008 through mates suggesting it to me. First heard Disko Rekah by Loefah and Blipstream by Skream, just fell into it through those. Then I got dubstep allstars 5

First night I went to was Skream @ Plug (waste venue for dubstep imo) in Sheffield '08, when he'd just made that Klaxon's remix...
Musically my taste has gone into the deeper side, tribal-ish (ramadanman, el rakkas, orphan101) and the older grimey sounding tunes (when it was ok and original to have heavy sounding tracks

Well, I use to be heavy into sampling, abstract beat, hip-hop nonsense (I need to get back on that stuff). Anyway, to find samples and strange audio I use to order records from this place in San Francisco called Aquarius Records. Around 2007 they featured a dubstep compilation that was released by Breakbeat Science.
I listened to an audio sample of Wormsign by Gravious and I was hooked! Needless to say, I bought the compilation.
That honestly put me in my place. I had heard garage, drum&bass, and other electronic music genres, but dubstep from that period struck a serious chord.
Alright, I'm done.

Randomly found a couple of Scuba mixes on the internet (under the name of DJ Paul Rose) in 2005, showcasing a load of the Hotflush releases from around then, among other things. Got me hooked and I realised that it was the sort of tempo and sound I wanted to produce. First heard dubstep on a system in the second room of a Drum & Bass night in 2007 and started mixing it in 2008!

the worlds heaviest dubstep grime and bass compilation.
bought it the second it came out thinking it was a bunch of tearout dnb cds.... and dear god im so happy that it wasnt.
after that.... my mind synced to 140bpm and hasnt changed since.

When I listened to The Roots Of Dubstep, realised I'd been listening to dubstep/what would become it since 2000/2001 as a 10/11 year old haha, used to clock El-B and Horsepower tracks back in the day, through a friend's older friend. Didn't realise how much I was into UKG until I was going through old garage tracks with my girlfriend and was like "You've gotta remember this one surely?" thinking it must've been in the charts at some point, but checked, and none of these tracks ever got anywhere near the top 40.
Remember hearing stuff like Night, Midnight Request Line/Rutten, some old Shackleton tracks, Burial stuff, go guessing I've known about it since 2006, but started getting deeper into around 2007/2008.

in 2007... reading these leaflets & wondered "WHATS DUBSTEP"?
then when I heard some... realised that is exactly what I needed.
(also realised I had been listening to it for the last 6months or so)
first album I had was "The World's Heaviest Dubstep Grime and Bass"
still in love with this compilation & am stuck in this era of dubstep!
then I started researching dstep hard!

I wanna know when did you start listening to dubstep year wise and what were the first few bits ya listened to.. did ya taste change over time? where were the first time you seen dubstep played out? (year and venue) did your taste change over time, where ya at now? last one short an sweet as poss please.. do you believe dubstep is heading in the right direction for you in your opinion in terms of the wider audience it now involves and how beats have developed and the Dj's at the top?
listened to my first track about maybeeee...2008ish maybe 07
coki - spongebob, such a nuts fucking tune, coki's a favourite still.
my taste aint changed much apart from loving more mellow coki than his tearout stuff.
dubfreaks#2 blup and on the vid
and if the genre is growing and gaining money and new producers and dj's then its going all cooshty.

When did I join in?
far too late
about two and a half years ago... sort of ashamed to say that it was excision who got me into dubstep, but I heard No Escape and Do it Now and I was intrigued by the sound... not yet hooked, but interested
i immediately started researching, and the next tune I listened to was Root or Goat Stare... and I was hooked. I had just never heard anything so dark, so bassy before... so minimal but so massive.

Re: History of dubstep, When did you join in?855- 8
2006/07 for me, I would religiously follow Ninja Tune releases and some dubbier tracks got played on their solid steel radio show (Massive mixing skills!) and I always used to be into trip hop, experimental beats and hip hop orientated instrumental music, so it was fairly easy to slip in.
Oddly enough the tune that got me obsessed was Mr Scruff, Ug, even though its not really dubstep. The sub bassline on that tune got me hooked on the sound, so I went in search and now here I am. My first proper dubstep night was Caspa and Rusko playing Norwich way back when, just at the time of dropping Fabriclive 37.
That album seems to be popping up alot in this thread.

Re: History of dubstep, When did you join in?855- 8
Started hearing it late 07, started liking it early 08.
First things I heard were Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior, Skream - Watch The Ride and of course Caspa & Rusko - Fabriclive 37.
Didn't even understand sub at the time, was just listening to it through shitty speakers, so only liked the midrange stuff.
Plus everytime I looked for Mystikz I couldn't find anything. All I could find were mix CD's, so then I got Plastician - Rinse 06 & Skream - Rinse 02, N-Type - Dubstep Allstars.
And then I heard Loefah on a sub, then it all changed...
Wish I had got into the Scene when it was less commercial, but hey, I'm still hearing things from back in the day that are blowing my mind, so it's all good.
