If you are layering kicks, do yourself the favor of zooming WAY in and making sure the crests and valleys are lining up amongst your various various, okay?

that's how i do it:

1. a good sample of a kick + pararell compression

then of course kick sounds shitty it clashes with other elements - get rid of that by eqing or sidechaining.
