Because he's a street artist and most of the stuff he does is illegal so keeping his identity secret is rather important if he wants to avoid the long arm of the law

he can afford it. i think perhaps he is tolerated, as wherever he sticks his card becomes a landmark and photogenic and an asset to the area.
maybe

cant help thinking that sheperd geezer went over banksy just to get his ratings up.

i dont really consider wallpapering as graffiti and i know im going to incur a lot of peoples wraths when i say this but swoon goes into that box as well. it can be very very good art, as in the case of swoon, but to me, if its not painted its not graffiti.

i dont know any of sheperds other work apart from this example but i think this is a bit whack and dont really see why his little photoshop face is justified goin over the banksy. is the shep wallpaper a picture or malcom x? if you use someone like that, its got to be justified in the location/situation. it all just cries for attention 'look at me'.... instead of making people go, 'whoa, look at that'

so, my thoughts - big thumbs down

That's a good point and I think in some cases you're probably right

It doesnt have to be painted to be graff, and that not just a matter of opinion/. To dismiss a peice, because it's not done with one particular media is rather closed minded....
I agree with the rest of what is said,,,tho,...

thats one of the main draws of graffiti, everyone workin and competing from the same starting point, the ABC, 26 letters that everyone knows...think it was mode2 who said summat to the effect of "we dont have landscapes and trees and valleys etc to paint, everyone knows the abc so that what we paint" gives a solid foundation. ummm i think im making sense?

I think people call him out for his hypocrisy, his anti-capitalist agenda seems pretty stupid when he is sells his art for ridiculas prices at celebrity exhibitions, in a way he has become a parody of himself.

I'm not bothered either way, i like his art and don't get caught up in his hype.

I really doubt he has much to do with the organising of these events that his stuff gets sold at - especially the LA thing. And if any one of you writers turned down some dumb fucking american celebrity offering you 100k for a piece I would slap you in the face.

He takes the piss - thats the whole deal, you rekon he wet himself with excitement when he knew brad pitt was a 'big fan' ? Nah, he woulda cracked up laughin wondering how much money he'll make off that sucker. At the end of the day he's a writer - not an artist - but one who's work transcended the big fat line between vandalism and street art in a way that few did before and gained more respect for the practice than anyone else. Who else has their work protected by the people who own the buildings he's writing on ?
