Exactly what Pistonsbeneath just said, although it would be hard to prove. Say I produced Roots Dub, then suddenly I get into the filthy tearout stuff and make a ton of money, I could just tell you I wanted to progress musically.
thats degeneration not progression

There is compromise in music on all sorts of levels - writing music your audience likes, writing music the label you want to get released on likes or the djs you want to play your music etc
In a way you could say dubstep was created out of compromise - some of the originators wanted to write DNB it didn't work out for them, they moved on and created a new scene with different music. Compromise can be a good thing
I've got lots of different artistic visions some of them underground/progressive some of them commerical but good music with a bit of soul not cringeworthy cheese, provided your writing music thats popular which you enjoy should be called selling in not selling out

Selling out :
1 . Promoting a watered down version of what you love to a group of people who will not respect/value the music the way you would, rather wear it as a badge of undergroundy-trendy-coolness, purely on thge motivation of being famous or making money.
2 . Generally having your merchandise sold in HotTopic retail outlets.

"There is a lot of tension in the music that carries a satisfactory darkness with it, but it's also lazy music. You don't have to dance hard to move with it. It was born with a reefer in it's gob."
