thats the panther modern description isn't itekstrak wrote:Mate.. i fucking *wish* we were living in more Gibson-esque times.. roll out the bioware implants dammit !William Gibson | Neuromancer wrote: The counters that fronted the booths displayed hundreds of slivers of microsoft, angular fragments of colored silicon mounted under oblong transparent bubbles on squares of white cardboard ... Behind one counter a boy with a shaven head stared vacantly into space, a dozen spikes of microsoft protruding from the socket behind his ear.
damn its been well over 10 years since i last read it
yes and no, the idea behind tron was more like that cartoon "Reboot", where programs are personified by cute little characters who "live" inside the computer. the hero is brought into the computer by laser beam that digitizes him and beams him physically into the computer. visually, yes, it may have even inspired gibson, but not from a technology standpoint. i just watched tron the other day, good flic.Parson wrote:tron predates neuromancer btw

mmmm...he had people who had transferred their consciousness into ai programs in the matrix. but tron portrayed the inhabitants as living creatures, who had girlfriends, bosses, etc...beyond a virtual representation as humans, they were individuals. i guess you could say AI, but they were not aware of themselves as such, they worship the "users" and whatnot.Parson wrote:both stories have humans living inside the matrix
i don't think gibson was too inspired by tron, as cyberpunk like writing existed before both of them
in gibsons matrix, i imagine, a program might look like a person, but it's purpose would be utilitarian, it wouldn't unwind at the end of the day by going to the game world.
maybe i'm reading it wrong, but when i watched tron the other day i kept wishing they had made the human's entry into the matrix more of an interface, rather than "beaming him" into the computer. it would have made the movie less dated.
i'm a paranoid wierdo, so i wish i could agree. but if you've been to a dubstep show lately you know that luckily our world isn't THAT dark yet. i always though gibson's world was dangerous enough to be interesting without being so opressive and spirit crushing as orwell's world.two oh one wrote:No, it's more of a Huxley or Orwell.
however the powers that be DO WANT TO SHUT US THE FUCK DOWN. so keep it real.
most of the programs in tron were artificial except for tron's buddy jeff bridges who was a real human
i don't see how the beaming vs jacking in thing is such a big difference to you

i'm not used to this west coast shit, everyone here is like "big deal". back east cockroaches were fucking impossible to get rid of if you got them and they took over everything, not something you could ignore. i hope that these roaches are different and it's not just that everyone out here is a dirt ball, although some of my neighbors are borderline.Parson wrote:they found a 300 foot tall pile of guano that was covered with a moving surface of roaches
