Discussion about illegal music downloads

Unfortunately...this^ I have an illegal copy of every tune I have ever bought, so i can listen to tunes through headphones when I have a cigarette etc instead of having to whack it on the turntables. Although I still spend more than I can afford on beatport boomkat and juno. I blame their regular enticing emails and instant purchases with paypal.


Pirating is fine, loads of people do it. What is important is that, if you really like what you pirate, go out and buy it when you have the dollar. Only fair to those artists who spent time and effort making you feel that way.

Piracy has done great stuff for many artists. There are a few interesting studies done and it's apparent that the industry is changing, but I only see it changing for the better. Extremely large labels are becoming irrelevant. The entire industry as a net worth is made more and more of smaller labels every year, and yes sometimes a leak can sling profits up some extra. Plus, in this age where music (and much of what we "have") is made up of a tiny collection of 0s and 1s that can be reproduced a million times, it's harder to see certain things as just commodities, and how you can "steal" such things.

Personally don't think there's really an excuse for pirating music. I can see the logic behind DLing something you've bought on wax though.

Think about it, you'd happily spend £1.29 on a bottle of Coke, or a bag of crisps and a chocolate bar. So is £1.29(ish?!) that much to ask for, for a piece of music someone has put an awful lot of effort into making, and something you'll get a lot of enjoyment from.

It's like how they don't check your ticket on the metro, you can't expect people to pay based on morals, it's ridiculous

The current rehash of copyright laws that means that you can (or will be) able to own a song in any format as long as you purchased it legitimately so if you buy it on vinyl you're entitled to download a digital copy since you already own the rights for the material to be in your possession. Its not the act of you downloading it that is illegal then, it's someone making it available to download to people that don't have the right to ownership under copyright law as they haven't purchased a legitimate copy which isn't your problem. You could then, under these guidelines, buy a tune on mp3 and then copy a vinyl...

I'm not even sure that making material available to download is illegal anyway since I've only ever heard of people having lawsuits aimed at them for downloading material I think, though I may be wrong?

There are plenty of very valid reasons. Just a few (not saying I personally use any of these):
-The artist is dead. For example, in the case of Gil-Scott (RIP), your money would go to the label and his estate. His estate didn't make the music though
-Out of print/hard to find releases. Anti-War Dub is amazing, but the only way to legally get it now is to pay $50+ to someone on ebay/discogs which doesn't really help Mala at all. I thought the whole point of music was supporting the artist?
-The artist and/or label could be huge assholes and you don't want to give them your money

Obviously, I didn't cover the entire argument, but I think I made it clear that it's not black and white.

i buy vinyl, pay a spotify subscription for £10 a month, and use a lot of youtube (usually until the stuff on here see's a vinyl release)

Bottom line is it's a morally wrong act that has benefits and disadvantages for the artist and the listener. I pay for music I like, usually after I have downloaded it illegally or at least checked to see if it is on youtube first of all. As a result I've certainly bought more music since the advent of large scale broadband (2003ish) than I ever did previously.

I doubt I'd ever have bought everything I could buy Ikonika if I didn't have the liberty of being able to download her stuff illegally before hand. Now I just buy her stuff on the strength of her name alone and I trust it.

I do see where you're coming from habit. I apologize if talk like this is can cause harm to this forum, i mean this with all honesty.

I can see what your saying with how us new generation is open about this subject, I've always been extremely open about this file sharing shiz.

But attention whores, thats not fucking necessary. Fucking morrons? Why you actin so heated towards all these people youv'e never even met. Do you know any big time producers who have lost fortunes off their tracks being illegaly downloaded? I'm going to go out on a limb and say, no. And you know what if artists had an issue with this kind of shit why don't they do something? It's not like it would be hard to find it, they know its there. It's stealing, which is illegal. Legal actions can be taken. I don't hear too much about that stuff though, do you?
