im kind of amazed that no one has mentioned kode 9 or burial yet. i tend to think that the darkest tunes are not so much 'hard' as they are brooding, and deep. both kode 9 and burial are masters of depth.

yah! defa. burial and kode9 are deep and dark, depth and a great sense of mysterious rhythms.
Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming:
Holy Jesus. What are these goddamn animals?

it depends what your definition of dark is...

some may think deep and heavy, moody soundscapes, menacing atmospheres etc. like burials stuff

others view dark as tearout, skrewface twisted shit

I just see the latter as angry and aggressive, not particularly dark.

That sort of stuff bores the shit out of me at the moment, doesn't have much depth. I'd say Bury the Bwoy's pretty dark in a hairs on the back of the neck standing up sort of way. Oh and Neverland too. Neither particularly brutal but definitely take you off to the unknown.

Kode and Burial too naturally. I think they're darker emotionally where as the other stuff just sounds like tedious, teenage-angst, daddy wouldn't buy me a playstation, horror sample shit.
Hmm....
