im practicing mastering quite often at the moment, if any1 wants a track mixed and mastered for free i dont mind doing it for a bit of self-experience on different material from my own.
i have been producing 8 years and spent 2 years in college doing music tech + i have good monitoring headphones. i can get songs as loud as commercial tracks without distorting but i obviously cant do as good on a really shit mixdown :L
anyway, any1 send me some stems if they want this done ;)

To address your initial question, without prejudice, you can use compression on the 2 bus before mastering, sometimes it can be a cool effect to add a color or tone over the mix you can't achieve within the individual tracks, but in some cases this is actually more trouble than it's worth. I would consider 2 bus processing while mixing a more advanced technique, if you are not sure, I wouldn't bother.

As far as sending audio to MEs goes, we generally have no problem with 2 bus processing, as long as you let us know what you've done and why you've done it, and if it's just for loudness sake, it's probably going to damage the final result..

Still though most producers i really look up to have a large hand in mastering their own tunes so i want to do my own tunes too.

If you get ozone look up the dj vespers tutorial... he shows you how he uses the plugin and it helped clear some stuff up fo rme back in the day.
I assume you mean for free, excluding the £120 on buying the software? haha

I think hes stating he can master his tracks for free; meaning not paying for an ME.

Bus compression depends somewhat on the competence of the producer.
It would be fairly easy to set up wrongly for someone starting out.

However, I rarely ask if someone has used a bus compressor (or ask for an explanation why) unless I can hear
that there is one and it's digging in too deep (too much gain reduction) to get a good mastering result.

A more common issue is a 144dB theoretical resolution file (24bit) with 4dB of dynamic range, though
I am glad to say these are also much less frequent of late.

Nothing wrong with mix bus processing, sometimes it's a great way to get your mix sounding unique/glued/vibed up whatever you wanna do.. if that's what you want.. but if you're looking to "maximise level" you're only impairing what can be done at a later stage, go ahead and experiment with mix bus compression, but just keep objective when you think about what might happen next and where you audio will end up :)
