Re going strong, I bought a thinkpad in 2003, I juuust retired it last week, and really still does get used daily. Over that 9 year period I had to replace the battery once, and had to solder the powersupply cause I stuffed it in and out of a computer bag compartment that was too small for it, on a daily basis for years. Only problems I ever had. Still is fast and strong. The same cannot be said for the macs that I've owned.

Just bought a post sandybridge i3 lenovo, f, what was it 2.66 at 4 gigs for $349 brand spanking new. Hahah, jokes.

One thing nobody has mentioned...you say you're starting a sound producer course. You should find out what software they use on this course. If they run Logic then get a Macbook. If they don't run Logic then I suggest something like:

http://www.ebuyer.com/269920-samsung-rv ... v520-a04uk
Samsung RV520
Intel Core i3-2310M 2.10GHz
6GB RAM
750GB HDD
£500

...and spend the other rest of your budget on some OK monitors and a good soundcard. Or some good headphones and a cheap synth, presuming you have none of these things already.

Just a little side question:

When you talk about getting a good soundcard I'm guessing you mean a USB soundcard or?
I have the Cakewalk USB Audio Interface UA-1G on my main PC. Could I just plug that one in and does it function as a soundcard or am I totally missing the point here?
