@1:40 the mid-range synth that comes in, it has an Arabian feel to it.
Do you mean that synth brass sound? cos thats pretty simple. If its not syn brass then its sampled brass with just filter attack. syn brasss is just judiciously detuned saw waves with a slow filter attack.

Clare Maguire - Ain't Nobody (Breakage Remix). That is a well nice track. :U:

I kinda got it quickly in massive. Just get the right timbre and use fm to give it that brittle sound, and lowpass 12dbf, maybe also phaser/chorus.

If you've got refx Vanguard the 'm-claSS' LP FILTER WITH RES GIVES PRETTY MUCH THAT EXACT SOUND ALMOST REGARDLESS OF BASE SOUND. (capswhoops).

edit: Oh yeah, that m-class filter is a lowpass and bandpass in series, so you can do the same in massive.

I'm gonna presume you already know that the bass was heavily sidechained.

You can do fm in massive? Is that just like a fm sound wavetable setting or something?

Oh, i meant phase.

from the mannual: The Phase modulation implemented in MASSIVE is sonically equivalent to the
familiar frequency modulation or FM synthesis technique. The modulation
oscillator acts as the modulator while the main oscillator becomes the carrier.

New to the forum. I'm interested in the actual chopped-and-screwed-like structure of the bassline in this artist's song on soundcloud:

Soundcloud

I understand it is a convergence of multiple basslines but how is this achieved? What is the technique used? Additionally, speculation on the vst that may be getting used here.

Oh, and can anyone point me toward a good thread on mixing technique. I seem to be a bit boost and gain happy; trying desperately to break the habit to get more smooth/clean sounding mixes...

Song I'm working on below:

Hey, a little help with the chord stabs that are throughout the song.

And also the pads in this:

Thanks!

Sounds like 3 main sounds to me - a gritty stab, a yoi and a generic wubwubwub. You could make these easily in Massive (Youtube for 100s of tuts). As for the arrangement - I find messing around with patterns of the same notes played by different synths usually yields good results. :P

Also check the sticky on mixing, and maybe post your song in the WIP sticky (sounds nice btw).

Follow this if you have Massive and maybe add a Flanger effect, would probably sound similar.

So, how?

Now I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is a bass drum, as in the kind of bass drum you would have in an orchestra. Try looking online for some bass drum samples, Finding one with some boom like that one has but with not as much tail on it (that one seems to be shorter than your average orchestral bass drum hit). Then EQ take out the mudd, compress, etc. to taste.

It's the modern talking oscillator in massive layered with something else, Maybe the formant of another wave bitcrushed. Try some tube distortion, envelope on the cutoff of a scream filter. Trying these should get you somewhere in the arena.

I've been trying to make a lead synth like this for ages...
This example is pretty pronounced, but in other tunes its often in a more subtle version.
I tried putting LFOs on pretty much everything, especially fiddling around with the resonance in Massive, but no luck.

How do you make this bass (in massive fm8 or anything else?)

Post by WeAreStigma » Mon Sep 05, 2011 12:27 am

For the longest time i have been wondering on how to achieve a specific sound. It is the Warped (almost filtered)
bass from the Koan Sound Remix of A-Team by Ed Sheeran. I have looked under every rock and cant find any
instruction or direction on how to make it on any thing.
You can hear the sound at the begining of the drop @ 0.57 in the video
http://youtu.be/jkCyLCazTpQ

I would love some feedback if anyone knows how, i bet others might wonder as well!!!

Amazing! Thanks mthrfnk. This was very helpful! I'll try it out and see what I get. And thanks for the compliments on my track. It was my first attempt at producing a full length dubstep track :D . I'm a big fan of so called "glitch-step" and I'm trying to get closer to that sound. I'm also in the process of transitioning from Acid to Abelton, and the work flow is very different (and complex by comparison) :? . I'll check out some of your tracks on soundcloud soon!

Not dubstep, but the snares in this song are awesome. Anyone?

I'm wondering how to make this kind of huge, powerful Kick/Bass combination that you hear in a lot techno.
It's almost completely atonal and sounds a huge cloud of bass.
I've tried to overdrive, saturate, filter, compress and even add a touch off reverb to a fat kick, but I just can't get it.
Any tips?

Example 1:00 at drop

High Rankin released a Massive presets pack on Loopmasters I believe. Go check it out, I wouldn't doubt he's packed in the synth you want.

Add a fat stabby sub bass layer under you kick, eq them to sit nicely, play around with the results.
