Skrillex isn't the most popular dubstep artist . Why ? Because Skrillex isn't dubstep.

Scary Monsters, Scatta and First Of The Year are all dubstep, but he does have plenty of non-dubstep songs too

If you feature a womp in your song, then it's a variation of dubstep. If you really want to limit everything in this forum to pure "dubstep" you're going to lose 90% of it's content.

You know what despite agreeing that it's by far the most popular, I don't think I've ever properly heard it...

edit; just had a listen. Not even remotely familiar. But, 30,000,000 views? Fucking hell. Sometimes I'll hear some Brostep and think, yeah this isn't my cup of tea but I can definitely appreciate the talent. But that was just...weakest kick and snare on a continuous 1-3 lifeless pattern. No rhythm or syncopation. Layered beneath trancey synths that occasionally slightly distort. It isn't Dubstep. Definitely isn't Dubstep. Wierd trance at 140bpm or whatever, but never Dubstep. :corntard:

uuuuhhh what???

You're not seriously suggesting that an LFO filter on a bass was pioneered by Dubstep? What about all that music it featured in before the name was ever conceived? Jump Up DNB? Garage? And near enough every other electronic genre imaginable....

And B> You get views on youtube, whats your standing on the charts a.t.m.?
See, its a parralel universe and has nothing to do with actual sales.

I'll have to go with Midnight Request Line, it's been out for 6 years ffs. Scary Monsters might currently be the most popular, but I think overall Midnight Request Line might have it beat. P.S youtube views means nothing, Thriller has 97 million views, justin biebers "baby" has 631 million take that for what it's worth

Actually im pretty sure it does have to do with sales;

show me one video with 1000 views that has more sales than a video with 2 million views.

I find it funny how butthurt everyone still is about Skrillex being popular

+1 on Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

It's in 4th place on the iTunes dance charts even though the SM&NS EP came out when? In December? It's obviously selling decently well.

citing youtube as soemones source as to why a song that came out 1yr ago is more popular than tracks that are a staple in a genre and have been around for 5+ years is a bit silly

I think you meant one video with 2 views that has more sales then one with a thousand, but okay, I will. Bear in mind I can only post these because they are my own tunes, so they are the only ones I have firm, concrete examples of.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zOkYXLVJ-I > This video has 283 views, the release peaked at number 33 on Juno's dubstep sales charts for the month it was released, thanks largely to Mortal Grey and Phantom hertz awesome promotion, most of which happens via radio and club DJing, not sites like youtube and soundcloud.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAZZpzHwhNI > This video has 1,567 views, and well, hasnt yet reached number 33 on Juno's charts (ill keep trying though!).

I win, or at least, did exactly what you asked me to and posted examples. Youtube DOESNT reflect sales. Ask yourself this, are the people on youtube the types buying music, or are they on youtube to stream it? While asking yourself that, consider this ; once youve purchased a wav or 320 of a tune, do you ever bother youtubing it again after that, or do you just listen to the hq file you payed for? Finally, consider that the majority of those views are probably repeat listeners, not individual visitors.

Seeing what I mean, even kinda? The bit about do-you-stream-whats-on-your-hd should say it all really.

This has nothing to do with being butthurt over skrillex btw dude above me, Im arguing about youtube reflecting sales statistics, not anything to do with the artist in the videos, just the statistics and promotional aspects of music distribution. What huts said, not anything to do with the artist.

I would have to agree that it's going to be different for the U.K. than it is for the U.S. Over here (U.S.) Skrillex is crazy popular, and I would have to say SM&NS is by far the most well-known song, whether it's being played on Youtube or at parties. I have no idea about the U.K. though.
Fairly new to the producing realm. Only been going about a year and a half.

Your assuming the u.s. isnt a very diverse country, whats true where you live might not be true where I live. Where you live people might not have hhc nights, where I live, people might. make sense?

Ok, let me refine my statement. :P Among all high schoolers and college kids in my area, they really like the brosteppy stuff. Also, hhc nights?

Let me throw Rusko-Jahova, Coki-Spongebob, into the mix.
