Re: What do you do for a living & how did you get there?
I'm currently an auxiliary nurse, assistant to the CPN (psychiatric nurse) who manages this facility.
How did I get there? Iceland's desperate need for health care workers, a BSc, and an exam for certification. Oh, and the real reason (family knows the boss). That's just how it works here.
I'd say avoid it, the hours are so long and irregular, pay is good but I work 12 hour shifts. Not everyday but enough to be on DSF far to often, and enough to get me exhausted dealing with 5 women, 3 with severe mental illness, and multiple suicide attempts. I'd switch if I could. Air Traffic Control sounds boss =3

I work as an Archivist for a large commercial insurance brokerage.
Previously I've worked in Manufacturing, Event Logistics, Aerospace and Warehousing, mostly in low end roles.
I like my current job; though it doesn't pay all that great it does allow for a good work/life balance.

Catalogue Image Editor, I sit in front of Photoshop, colour correcting images of useless crapware so they look presentable enough to waste money on. I got the job by sheer luck, chit-chatting to my now manager in the local newsagent one day after bumping into him several times.

Worked at Pier 1 Imports for a total of 8 years as assistant manager in charge of merchandizing..
Was told that I couldn't move up because I looked too young to be affective in the position..
I quit - took a job at Amazon.com for 5 years...
became a number - lost my identity for another 10
PPG Glass, Winterthur Distribution, Avon Distribution, Agilent Technologies
Was - injured...went back to finish college
in metals and jewelry design- which seems utterly stupid and useless to me after all that...
and working to set up a company that designs for local boutiques...
I'm a dead windowdresser...

I'm a technical mechanical engineering apprentice for the MoD up here in Scotland at Rosyth dockyard.
Left school at 18 with pretty slack grades (not enough to do physics at uni), got a job at the bank of Scotland for a year in debit card fraud but it was fucking brutal. So kinda had to see about apprenticeships, was lucky enough to get a good one...
Moving down to Bristol in summer next year once ive 'come out of my time' to work at Abbeywood. See you Bristol heads in the dance in 6-7 months.

Re: What do you do for a living & how did you get there?
I'm a support practitioner for a semi-independence unit.
We look after 16-18 yr olds who have left foster care with no-where else to go.
As well as the basic shit (like teaching them how to iron their own clothes for example)
we have to deal with a lot of psychological issues. Learning disabilities, OCD, Self-harm,
Neglected parenting, hyper-sexualised behaviour, attention issues... etc etc.
I guess if the kids were "normal" they wouldn't be in care though, so its all part of the job.
It's kind of like being a big brother for the most part. Try and relate to them, play a bit of
playstation, get them to join in activities outside of the lodge, create a good social base
(they all seem to have deficits in social skills).
I got it because I'm a BSc in Psychology, I like behavioural Psychology and I impressed my
manager. My uncle introduced us and after a formal interview I got the job.
I actually really enjoy the work aspect of it - however I've lost a lot of respect
for my manager recently due to issues regarding my salary and payment.
I personally helped him out a lot and I feel like he's shitted on me, so I'm trying
to find a new job as an LSA or something like that. Anything that will allow me some
scope for career development in Psychology.
I want to go back to Uni and start a part time MSc next October.

Yeah, we're on a massive site atm but it's not bad, it's warm as fuck in there, but next week we're on four new houses without windows and it's just starting to get cold, ideal.clifford_- wrote:It can be a cold wet miserable life as a plasterer!DRTY wrote:From first to last.

I find the third trowel and hard trowel the easiest bits, putting on is the hardest for me, goes fucking everywhere
Hopefully after christmas I can afford me a hawk and trowel of my own

Re: What do you do for a living & how did you get there?
I work for a financial company (not a bank) in a few roles really, mainly ad hoc analysis stuff, summarizing data into lovely pie charts for stupid old guys etc
most of the work is looking at large companies expense programs which can be pretty hilarious to poke around in..
Got here by being lazy and not good enough at promotion, it's damn boring but fun, well paid and as someone said earlier, the work life balance is great which is more than I can say for a majority of my colleagues who have to take their work home
The jargon though...

Apart from a couple freelance bits and pieces - graphics, bookkeeping, marketing, etc - I've been unemployed for a bit. The under-the-table stuff pays the rent, but I'm still absolutely scrounging.

Partner/office mgr in a small publishing company... got here by starting out cleaning toilets, and doing a very good job of it, for years in between going to school., was taken on full-time and did more and more types of work until i did nearly everything for little pay until i earned a stake of equity in the company.. got here by being accountable for every piece of work i did.
