Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
I hate everything I've ever made, and still make to this day. I don't necessarily think everything I make is bad, it's just not as good as I want it to be. That doesn't discourage me though. if anything I think it's actually encouraging me to continue. My music is vastly superior compared to stuff I was making just a few years ago, so in that regard I am satisfied with my progress. But if anyone was to ask me how I felt about any of my tracks I would probably say they aren't very good and I still need a tremendous amount of improvement.

have you ever seen PressPausePlay? It talks about that^ perfectly!mikeyp wrote: lol idk but people put a lot of shit out there that is just.. not good..
not in a way that may not appeal to taste but is just very poor all around
Other than that, I always get discouraged..
I listen to some of the guys around here and just think, "damn, why can't I be this good?" or "I wish I could make music like this!"
But whatever ya know?
When you start something, you shouldn't just give up!
It takes time, practice, and patience!
The more you learn, the more you gain!
I've had a ton of improvement on my end in the last 7 months, so I don't intend on stopping anytime soon

Gurn, you can't be serious. That tune you sent me a couple months back (which is apparently in your sig as well) is one of the best I've heard on this forum. Its one of those tunes that I listen to alot vs. the other tunes in my library.Gurnumsbug wrote:Other than that, I always get discouraged..

But yeah man I'm dead serious!
I tend to make a lot of slower, I guess you can call "feel good" music or maybe even "sad music"!
I wish I could speed it up and make some party tunes, or even something that makes people dance ya know?

to get back on topic , i really have this alot , but i guess everybody has/had this. A little bit of insecurity makes you try harder i guess.
Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
I'm going back and listening to my tunes in the order that I made them right now, and I can definitely see the improvement in each one. I still feel like everything that I've ever made is complete shit, but at least each one is less shit than the last

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
In the end isn't that what it's all about though? I mean in all honesty, I think anyone that wants to be a music producer starts out wanting to be Beethoven, not in the literal sense but in the skill sense. That's how I was when I first started. Then I quickly realized that could never happen that quickly. Instead I settled for the goal being, "I want this one to be less shitty than the last one". Even though it sounds kind of depressing for a goal, it's actually quite satisfying because it's an accomplishment I can actually hear and control.Sine69 wrote:I'm going back and listening to my tunes in the order that I made them right now, and I can definitely see the improvement in each one. This is a very, very good point that I think not many people realise. Of course this can only be a good thing, I play some of my tunes that I think are terrible to my mates and they think they're amazing, and I'm thinking "can't you hear, the resonance is way too high on that lead and the piano's automation is well clunky"wub wrote: I've found that the more I make tunes, the more I find them not to my liking. This isn't because my skills are going downhill (I hope), but because as I learn more and do more, the standards with which I consider a tune to be 'good' are raising the bar higher and higher. I mean, when I was first making beats when I had my a copy of FL3 waaaaaaay back when I was still at University, I remember thinking I was the fucking SHIT with them.
Realising that actually you're not the best producer ever, far from it, can only push you to better things. It's lead me to be far more interested in the detail of sound and not being satisfied with "its ok"
My name is Dom and I like making ambientish music and drinking tea. Nice to meet you.

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
This is completely true. At some point in making music (or writing, or anything artistic, for that matter), there is a point when you realize what you need to do to make music you consider "good". Of course, after that it usually takes much longer to create good music, but at that point it's far more satisfying to create songs. And yes, listening to stuff you made when you just began REALLY makes you appreciate how much you've improved.Kochari wrote:This is a very, very good point that I think not many people realise. Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
Every single song I try to make I feel that way. It's because I know there are better producers out there and I can't settle for not the best, but I'm getting better.

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
Constantly.
I feel like I'm expecting way too much from myself tho, I am so motivated that I'm always discouraged when I can't get a sound or a feel in any of my tracks.

^thats good. It means you will continue to push yourself
Just don't get too down on yourself
Just don't get too down on yourself
Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
all the time. And tbh it's pretty easy to get down about your skills when you constantly compare yourself to the industry's leaders at a given time. I am ALWAYS Listening to my favourite dungeon sounds like matt-u, soap dodgers, biome, kryptic minds, youngsta, j-kenzo.etc. and getting frustrated. haha. The idea is to listen to tunes for IDEAS or creative inspiration, not actual sounds. If you do the former, it's easier not to get down about it
I'm approximately 18 months in to production now, and starting to get a little global support so it's on the up and up - but still a long way to go

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
Whenever I feel discouraged about my music, I go back and listen to one of the many two-minute acoustic and vocal songs I made when I was 13. Those always snap me right back into context. Then again, maybe I'll be doing the same thing when I'm 25, but with the tunes I'm making now

Re: ever feel discouraged about your tunes and skills?
I tend to come up with something maybe intro to the first drop and then put it away for awhile and when I come back I usually feel like its the worst idea I've ever made and that I shouldnt finish it. But I push through and I usually end up with my best tune (imo)
The other day I got a real perspective at a new years party because my friend played my latest (the one in my sig) during his dj set and holy fuck it was lacking bass :/ reality check haha
