Anyone doing anything interesting?

I don't know if this is what you're talking about, but I've been dabbling in creating am entire soundscape that isn't really for dancing, just a ton of different sounds that flow into each other (and obviously a lot of melody too)...sort of like a movie score. The idea occurred to me when listening to "1000 lost cities" by Kryptic Minds. So far my soundscape is 10 minutes long
Sorry if that isn't what you're talking about - it doesn't have anything to do with hardware or that stuff - but it is something interesting and different, at least for me.

only interesting thing iv done is i completed an FM (phase modulation) synth this year which surprisingly is very useful to me since im able to make new sounds with it.
it allows the user to draw their own waveform on each of the 6 oscillators, or can switch any oscillator into a multi osc with 100 standard & custom waveforms.
the synth has a low pass filter and res control on each part of the FM matrix for more control over the sound and the fun part is the user can randomise specific parts of the synth, eg a line of the FM matrix, or the waveform if using any multi oscs.
the synth is actually done now & i spent days/weeks bringing the CPU useage to a lower level (uses half the cpu of massive, fm8 etc).. but im currently redoing the whole GUI to make it look a lot better. i will be releasing a free cut down version in future only missing the FM filters and fewer oscillators.
heres a pic, some things are missing and looks messy since its not the latest image, but it has no bugs or anything since iv been using this and making presets for a month.

Been building cables and connectors a lot recently because I'm in the process of remodeling my in home setup I've got going now.
It's fun to do some handy work and get my eyes off a screen once in a while.

I've also been recording a lot of random little things. The other day recorded myself closing my car door and later turned it into a chunky little snare!

very cool, man. how did you go about building this? also, why phase modulation rather than frequency modulation?

Some great responses on here guys, love to see/hear about what you are all doing. Glad to see people creating outside of the box (not just outside of the comp but the mental box). Nothing sounds better in my eyes than mistakes through creation. Some of the responses have been really inspiring, especially the variety of projects people have.

Sonika, sounds cool that you are doing soundscapes, not really what I am talking about... but if you had made them using tape loops, home-made reverbs, noise generators you had made or designed, then I'd say it fits the idea of this thread. Otherwise you are just making soundscapes, not exactly a novel idea. Cheers though keep on trying new things.

i really want to do some of my own but the only way of doing it currently would be to walk about london with my laptop and audio interface so i can use my mic haha really good way to get robbed

Stuck a small condenser for tons / snares (those for live performances) on the other bottom of a cardboard tube. Put it closely to the monitors and record, great room reverb / harmonics. Got a bad / low quality pair of cables on one the outs of my interface, connected it to a korg kp3 and sent the out on the korg through a presonus bluetube, turn up tube drive and back to the interface input. Select radio filter in the kp3, draw a Z on the X/Y panel and you get a nice analog white noise swoosh. Don't know if it counts as something interesting.

I use a portable reel to reel, a microcassette recorder (dictator... which is actually my favorite), a walkman (with pitch controls... essential) and then various digital devices. The more lofi the better in my eyes.

Go pick up a walkman or dictator and use that to record, they are 25 dollars brand new, you could find one in a dollar shop for a couple bucks ez.

Funnily enough yes, but I use handheld recorders and they are a bit big for a condom. Out there I use the h4n which has dual condenser mics. I don't think it would fit on the unit, but I could put the unit into a ziplock freezer bag and stick the condom on an external condenser. If I do that I should take a pic of myself looking like a total nutcase in the ocean with a dildo-looking microphone with a condom during a storm.

I totally agree. I use a couple of new digital recorders purely for convenience and recording in questionable places, but the old tape is where it's at. What R2R do you use? I have an old Nagra and a big broken Ampex I've been wanting to repair someday. Do you have a good source for tape? I used to split tape costs with a friend who had a Space Echo and another weird tape echo but he sold it and the Roland has since died and repairs are costly.

Always wanted one of these. Portable James Bond business! They have always been crazy expensive though.

Lately - figured out I can run multiple instances of reaktor to multiple outs... This is going to lead to an instance of reaktor on both sides of my DJ mixer, essentially live producing tracks and then mixing them traditionally on top...

I wrote an album recently entirely orchestral, with no rhythmic section... Basically just alot of really maximal string compositions... Dedicated to my recently deceased gram.

Me n my friends started a band... I play oddball computer noises and run feedback loops, we have a jam-band kinda vibe, traditional 3 piece, no vocals, plus myself running electronics makes 4... Me n the drummer want to coordinate a breakdown into dnb... The idea is though we jam around the circle of fifths nonstop, we wanna end the band-break in between songs, treat it more as one would the arrangement of a DJ mix.

might have to learn how filters work first though.

Well filters are just EQs. EQs work by feeding back an out of phase signal upon the original, which lowers the volume depending on the amplitude of the out of phase portion (DB/octave)
