to say I couldn't give a shit about the "culture" behind it would be harsh and overstated. But generally, I've never watched any of those films/docu's. I'dont really care for the culture behind it, all I know is I just like the tunes (not all of them) and hearing MikeQ's EP's on a big system just really convinced me. when u hear the tunes, take some time when u can to consider the actual DANCE that the tunes have inspired, or are based upon, u know what i mean? **house music dancing in general is pretty varied in styles & history. very much like the bboy hiphop thing,or more obviously the Chicago juke / footwork, ghetto tech thang ( which is entirely based in house music ), & its all cultured around an actual dance right? so to hear the references & tunes outside the physical dance culture of it all, there's always going to be something missing in the translation. which is kinda the point of this thread right? .. questioning the translation / reinterpretation of the music without the culture. blah blah, it happens all the time.this bass music shit can be the culprit here, lets admit it. ha.

as a house music fan in general, if yer looking back, you can't really overlook the presence of the vogue inspired beats & stateside riddims that have been there since day. for me that's the most interesting thing about it - the tunes the dances are inspired by, or even influence the production of sometimes ( that you hear now for example) - classics like old Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden "Witch Doctor", Basement Jaxx - Fly Life, MAW "the Ha", Interactive "Up and Down", old Chez Damier beats, right up to Major Lazer joints now. there's lots.

yo, if there's any b-boy or hiphop heads reading this thread, Mr Wiggles ( NYC - Zulu Nation, Rock Steady Crew, Electric Boogaloos, etc ) gives a quick take on early Rockin & straight up House Music dancing in this class setting interview @ 7mins in - the Latin roots of b-boying, boogaloo, & house dancing. its very interesting.

original dance styles seem to be: latin styles like the Mombo, Rocking, Lofting, Boogaloo - including poppin & locking, B-boying, Waacking, then Vogue - which also includes elements of b-boying, freezing, poppin, & locking, on to House Dancing , then onwards. strictly on a physical dance level, its all in there. its just a hiphop vs. disco incarnation of dancing & where they ended up. i come from a hiphop background as a kid, so to learn all about this later on within the context of house music is pretty ill. once again purely on a dj-ing level, any interest in HOUSE music is based on the dance culture that it has inspired. huge history to it all. it has everything to do with House music from the root.

Archie Burnett (House of Ninja) further goes on to explain the US west coast vs. east coast styles - from the early Soul Train dancers, boogaloo, Waacking vs. Vogue - once again, different variations of house music dancing.
