I love all the hate massive gets

fm8 zeta and alchemy may be better in terms of options nad variety of sounds you can achieve but i know massive best and i can get closer to the sound i want with massive much better then any of those, so for me - massive.

Reason's synths is it for me maelstrom is just instant grittiness and its so easy to get whacky sounds out of subtractor, love it

Captain obvious sometimes needs to make an appearance because people start tripping, just wish he didn't have to so often possess me to do this. I understand this topic is a basis of conversation and learning, but to all the creepers reading and learning, don't think that you need any particular synth to get results. You just need to learn the basics of subtractive, and then find a synth that works well for you. Well beyond this is the nuances of individual synths.

I voted zebra (2.5) for me, because it is extremely versatile and sounds great. Downside is complexity and a better, but still bad u-he interface. This synth really is not for everyone, in particular, beginners.

Subtractive synthesis can seem way more complex than it really is, and a synth like zebra can encourage this. Massive is a very close second for me because of the simplicity of the layout and the speed with which I can get the sounds I want. I can make massive sound incredible, so I'm not tripping.

Where I'm at, I love all the damn synths (that I've used) they all have something that they excel at, they all do something particularly well. Honestly, a lot of what makes a good synth for me is interface and workflow.

Totally agree with you. Usually, a synth is a trade-off between simplicity (which leads to workflow but lack of variety) and complexity (which leads to variety but lack of workflow). I tend to prefer the first.
The thing about Massive is that it is that it kinda breaks this trade-off. That's why I voted for it.
It's pretty simple, the workflow is brilliant and unbeatable (I already said this in another thread but i'll say again. it's modulation system SHOULD be a standard) BUT the variety isn't that low. In the middle of all that simplicity there's a huge range of sounds you can make, and a high percentage of that range is pretty cool.

I've tried Zebra before and it's easy to mess arround and make cool sounds (it has power) but following a path you have planned before is a bit clumsy (it has a bad interface). I also find it a bit hard to fine tune. But it's one of the synths I'm thinking to buy.

Z3ta+ 2 is a beast, especially for the price, the waveforms can be tweaked indefinitely and it has a very straightforward, almost "Reason synths"-esque interface, but with more modulation possibilities, and great sound.*

its about making little tools that do specific task that you can't get anywhere eles, like a ring-mod thats controlled by sequencer, or maybe a dual ring-mod controlled by a sequencer, and a lfo, or maybe... you get the idea. Also it's about modding/sampling other peoples ensembles, have you ever wished you could change/add a new part to one of your VST's, like the guys that don't like Massives filters, well with Reaktor you can take a filter from one ensmble, and add it to another, or say you run out of lfo's on a patch, you could just add another. With time you will build up your collection of macros, and ensembles, and will be able to navigate around reaktor quickly, and make better ensmbles that your time, and effort should pay off. If you don't like problem solving, then making stuff in Reaktor probably ain't for you, as in the beginning every step you take you seem to hit a road block, but the Reaktor library, and user library are more than enough of a reason to dip your toes into Reaktor

I need to try to learn it, thats all. always intimidated the fuck out of me. all i can get Reaktor to do is explode using a noise generator, or kind of fuck with a couple ensembles like laser bass for example, and even then its like god damn, i'm learning a whole new synth and its interface is downright cryptic. Recently grew the balls to try making my own absynth patches. It drove me mad as well. its times like that I retreat to Reason's synths

Massive was around long before the generic wobble sound people use it for today. It's a dope synth, that's why people are picking it.

In my opinion there are better sounding synths.I have komplete,all of arturias synths and uhe zebra and i can tell you for a fact it does not compete with a lot of these for sound.
Yes it has a good lay out and probably out of all of them is the easiest to learn but i feel absynth and fm8 are much better sounding with a very slightly bigger learning curve.
I can promise you spend a month with arturias arp2600v or fm8,learn them untill you can't learn no more and i'll put a wager on it you will hardly use massive.

The thing about Massive isn't only the learning curve. For example, I know EVERYTHING about Albino and the older z3ta version (from back when I produced psy trance), probably even more than I know Massive, but I get better results with Massive anyway. It's not the learning curve but the workflow that makes Massive so awesome.

About not sounding good, I don't agree with you either May not be good to make giant pads (for example, I hate unison with Massive, I barely use it), synthetize drums or ambient sounds, but for what it was made for (electronic leads and bass) it really excels. It's not just me, you can read reviews about this everywhere. In fact, when Massive was released, it's primary objective was to be a monster synth in terms of sound quality.

As for Absynth and FM8... I tried an old version of Absynth long ago. I respect it, I actually find it the most powerful synth out there, but the workflow sucks completely. It's just too much. But I heard the new versions are better but haven't tried yet.
As for FM8, it's part of my arsenal but I end up not using it that much. It has one thing I don't like in synths generally which is too much "page" (or window) changing, I hate that, it's a workflow killer for me. Also, I seriously hate it's modulation system. C'mon, a synth so complex and you have so few targets to modulate?!

i guess it is one of the better synths for drums too

You should try Absynth or Omnisphere for pads then
