Source Direct ARE dnb IMO.
Their releases remain in my bag forever. Pure dark cinematic music,

Anyway yeah, total youtube thread. How about some more drum production related talk/links?

As far as drum machine samples go, everyone knows Goldbaby is the place to go, but for more great drum machines sounds from the 80s (they have a certain charm) I'd recommend the newish Reel Machines for Addictive Drums: http://www.xlnaudio.com/?page=products& ... elmachines
Great when layered with acoustic kits to get a more organic sound, but with the digital punch of a drum machine.

Also a good alternative to the overused 200hz boosted snare is simply pitching up kick drums and layering with the snare. Or even odd sounds instead of percussion. Get on freesound and layer some sounds of basketballs on pavement or someone kicking a football. Simple but often overlooked trick to make snares smack.

I saw an interview with Blawan a while back- says he uses the warper in Ableton. He also went on about how its only one hit per song often, just warped and manipulated into lots of different sounds.

A tip for finding cool sounds I would say is to go through your favourite tv show/DVD and sample as many bits of it as you can. I've got some really good snares from a backhand and two swords hitting in recent tunes. Also record yourself hitting stuff. Surefire ways to give a tune a different vibe, after all noone else ids going to be using those recordings

(ps. spam but wormcode- ive been listening to loads of source direct/photek recently and made the tune in the sig copying, i mean influenced by them)

Hutyluty, have you got a link to that blawan interview? I had always suspected he uses the same pitched hit, like in potchla vee. It's a good tip as it guarantees the drums will all work together, particularly if they are pitched at harmonically sympathetic intervals.

Yeah the reason i dont try and make DnB is because, the peak has been reached with source direct, anything else will always be in it's shadow. With Bass/dubstep, there still feels room for improvement.

By the way that Mental pain track is right up my street, sick vibe. Would love a copy.
