good idea, in fact you should round up every single skrillex fan and bring them to this gathering

I'll invest in petrol and matches

You cant throw a Skrillex party and not have Skrillex there. That can quite easily be taken as false advertising and you can get sued.

Also you cant call it a party, and it is linked to Skrillex.

Not strictly true.

Fair usage policy can allow for use of an artists' name and/or likeness to be used, providing it doesn't infringe on copyright (i.e. you're not passing yourself off as them) and doesn't paint them in a negative light (i.e. calling your night 'Skrillex Tribute' and then gang raping a bunch of kittens).

This is the same protection that cover bands and tribute acts utilise. As long as you're not taking the piss and actually pretending to be the artist in question, and are clearly labelled as a tribute night/act, then you should be okay.

your much better off making yourself a unique name and establishing a bit of a brand if your planning on making a regular night out of it, rather than just skrillex partayyy, as for music thats better than skrillex, Requake, Badklaat, Coki, Jakes, Tunnidge are all ten bazillion times better and still heavy stuff

as an example

I was told you can't even mention the artist's name, so how could you have a Skrillex tribute party (or any other type) without mentioning the artist's name? It will say on the flyer it's a tribute party and that Skrillex will not be there. Is there a way I can find out for sure whether or not that would be okay? My boss mentioned in particular that he doesn't want to be sued because of this. It is about Skrillex music with a 90 minute set. I've been practicing run throughs of the show trying to do justice with the lights, and it's a challenge for sure. He has a lot going on, and he includes a number of different musical ideas in many of his songs. Reptile's Theme and Devil's Den are both good examples. I honestly feel sorry for people who can't appreciate it, even if they don't particularly "like" it.

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm in the US though...I wonder if anything would be different here. That flyer didn't say tribute or mention that Skrillex wouldn't be there did it?

Thanks for the suggestions but I still want to do a Skrillex party anyway. Bassnectar would have been my next choice, but I'll try to listen to the guys you suggested too.

If you mean the party idea yes I want to try it. If it never happens I've still learned things from playing around with it. I've got a 90 minute set the way I want it to go and have practiced run throughs doing lights to it a few times, recording as I do. Then I can watch it later and think about changes to make and things to add and things to try not to fu*k up next time etc... So even if the party never happens I can apply things from practicing Skrillex to other things, like I did lights for a band called Rehab last night and managed to squeeze a few tricks in there, and on Thursday and Sunday nights when it's all DJ. Trying to get them to play Skrillex is a waste of time, and on the rare occassions that they do it's usually some screwy remix that's an insult to the original idea, or they only play a fraction of a song, or both. But! The majority of people I talk to say they like Skrillex even though they sure don't get much of it around here. What little dubstep that does get played here you guys wouldn't approve of any more than his stuff I don't think. Just my luck that the only DJ who comes around and does play it, is the DJ for when we have fight nights and I'm not running a real light show. That guy will play a number of different Skrillex songs.

If you know where I can go to find out about whether or not we can use his name etc PLEASE let me know. Since there are tribute bands--sometimes we have more than one in a night--it seems there should be some way of having a tribute part too, and even some way(s) of promoting it. It would say on the flyer it's a tribue and that he won't be there.
