Re: Use By / Best Before dates...
for cheese mould depends on the kind of cheese - soft or crumbly (like cheshire) cheese no, hard cheeses are probably fine,
eggs are probably gonna be fine so i never check, plus i use them quite quickly
you can tell whether milk is ok by tasting it
everything else, instructions were made to be ignored

It takes quite a lot for cheese to actually go bad to the point of not edible. All that happens up to that stage is just an increase in strength, that said I can't really stand really mature cheese.
Bread, nah, if I see a bit of mould it goes in the bin, but if it's just dry then it gets toasted.
Milk you can tell straight away from the smell innit.

Im well fussy about these things, I cant eat anything thats been opened after a day. My housemate has no problem scraping the mould off bread and eating 4day old takeaways he finds in his room though....

Not that I know of. I just cant imagine being hungry enough to eat bread with lumps of removable mold on when you can buy a loaf of bread for about 20p.wub wrote:Do you suffer from allergies?Johnlenham wrote:That is fucking rankPinUp wrote:I normally pick off the little circles and then toast it but only if I'm really hungrywub wrote:Depends on the level of mould...I'd stop short of using the bread if it's got that fine level of mould 'dust' all over it. No. I've worked at a bio supermarket for a few years now. So there's no preservatives in any of
the products and still the 'consume by' date is way earlier than the actual expiration date.
The safety margin is quite big, and they also put dates on stuff that really doesn't expire at all.
You can easily dig into some 'nutella', 4 years after it has expired for example.
Same goes for most canned stuff obviously.
Just watch out with any fresh goods and dairy.

I generally ignore the dates myself unless, like others have mentioned, it looks or smells bad.
Do you guys also use this rule for food that you have cooked, like a roasted chicken or beef joint. The reason I ask is because I have have some slices of pork in gravy that I made on Sunday and im wondering how long it will stay fresh before i get the shits from it.

Re: Use By / Best Before dates...
They seem to be super cautious with most these dates. Depends on the product though. Shit like milk obviously goes quick
parmesan can go months past it's date though.
I've eaten year out of date cured meat too as it was in a vacuum sealed pack. That shit will last forever essentially until it's opened.

Oh and beer is a weird one.
Year past the date carlsberg varies can to can
two year old fosters almost tastes better than normal but makes you feel sick straight away.
Five year old special brew tastes like metal

Bottled pilsner shouldn't last more than a year usually. Not sure about other beers though,wolf89 wrote:Oh and beer is a weird one.

some can ferment further when already bottled/corked whatever.

To those who said yes, what's your position on the 5 second rule?
Shlohmo wrote:IDK GUYS I KINDA LIKE IT WEN THEY GO TO OTHER COUNTRIES AND DO DRUGS
Re: Use By / Best Before dates...
I also use the sniff/observe test. I'd say up to 5 days after expiration on easily perishable food. I also boil remaining eggs. I should learn to make bread pudding.
5 second rule: as long as it didn't drop in shit/covered in dirt, I'll still eat it.
