it has everything to do with why i personally hate the music industry and consequently parts of dubstep, he does not own that sound ur right but why on earth do people feel the need and/or want to imitate him, what is the point of having replicas of that sound....
Too many people get called Burial rip offs when they have their own sounds, or are borrowing from things that were around lonnnnng before the world became aware of Burial. Burial is an amalgamation of all that came before him... Garage, Jungle, DnB, experimental stuff.

Burial did not invent 2-step drums. He wasn't even the first to do those broken 2-step drums.

He did not invent crackle.

He did not invent pitch-shifted vocals.

He did not invent ambient music.

Many of the people that get called Burial rip offs are rip offs of Burial the same way that Pinch is a Digital Mystikz rip off.

Not at all. ;-)

lol but of course ur going to say that, most of ur back catalogue is shall we say "similar" in style to burial/

teasing aside... ;-)

i do agree with u, that in some cases there are examples of producers whose natural style of production is just by luck similar to say a more well known one, this is just coincidence and to be fair shit like that is unfair, when they get dismissed as mere copy cats BUT that argument ignores general trends in electronic music, bandwagon jumpers as they are known, its incredibly hard these days to not be apart of one, i know, but people must try and find their own sound, then maybe some of us bystanders wouldnt jump to such irrational opinions.

Please expand.

Was it the minimal DnB release?

Was it the dubstep release?

Was it the house-y, garage-y "bass music" release?

Was it the other minimal dnb release?

Was it the percussive, synthy, garage release?

Was it the grime-inspired, 80 bpm release?

Was it this one, probably the one that gets closest to Burial, a percussive, primarily around 100 bpm piece?

Or is it the forthcoming deep house piece?

Yeah mate, write off a completely valid opinion, because "most" of my back catalogue sounds like Burial. Yeah, this one could be a direct rip from Untrue.

Soundcloud

Face it man, Burial's probably my favourite producer ever, but El-B was doing those tightly swung drums, Boards of Canada were doing that broken, lo-fi stuff, Aphex was doing that ambient stuff, plenty of Jungle producers were doing those bass sounds.

No different to somebody listening to dubstep for 2 minutes and declaring it all to sound the same. :a:

man i said i was teasing, no need to take such a defensive stance, and i agreed with ur point, but what i am also adding to the equation is that u see it with a lot of labels, which "go with the times" and producers for that matter, im not pointing a finger at u, but what i am saying is by using the burial example as a template u can see the bandwagon effect in full action.

In a world of 6billion plus people, its hardly a surprise that people have similar musical styles. thats even how we define entire genres, artists with some sort of uniform characteristics in their style, some have more some have less.

It used to grate on me as well when people said dubstep sucks but the more i think about it the more i realise that generally speaking they are correct. Id say about 95% of dubstep released is complete and utter garbage with about 3% being decent and then the final 2% being golden.

It does have probably the worst quality control of any genre i've ever come across so its really no surprise that most people ridicule the genre when such a huge percentage of it is complete and utter shit.

It took DNB about 10 years to become dominated by shite, it took dubstep about 3 years... i've never seen a genre lose the plot so quickly and turn into everything dubstep was originally against.

With all this in mind i think its fair to say that generally speaking dubstep does indeed suck

I have to reply to this thread. Mainly because I hate on dubstep a lot, for the exact reasons in this thread :D
You should give it a go too.

Secretly I still listen to some dubstep once in a while, but it's mainly the stuff that's closer to juke or techno etc..

nope. reggae/dancehall has.

i think social networks or the internet in general played a big role in that process, though.

but one could argue about the majority of the shit tunes being actually dubstep or not. i mean if all that mainstream-billboard-pop-dance-trash was considered techno or house, these genres had a pretty high shit-rate, too.

soon someone will start blaming Skrillex for the downhill motion of dubstep and we will enter the never ending argument of brostep vs dubstep :cornlol: :corndance: :cornlol:
