either:

play around making bass and drum sounds -> end up with fucking huge beat and twisty bassline -> make a generic drop and some loop variations -> show it to all my friends who tell me its totally sick -> never actually finish it

or:

pick a key -> write a couple melodies -> go a bit more crazy with the articulation, velocity, inversions, arpeggio sections -> pick another key thats nice -> EVEN MORE MELODIES -> make some synth patches (mostly bass, lead and pad cause i'm boring like that) -> add drums -> end up with what i think is a beautiful and emotionally moving piece of music only to have everyone tell me that it's gay and boring.

i hate my friends.

or: listen to one of my favorite producers way too much for a few days -> open DAW -> make a carbon copy of their style -> delete it and cry myself to sleep worrying i will never do something original

or, what i'm most happy with at the moment:
fire up my cheesy 90's groovebox -> play around with the presets -> dance around stupidly -> ??? -> I'M A ROCKSTAR FUCK YOUR LAPTOP

think of track in head
struggle to make track as intended
lay down stretched asian samples w/ tons of reverb
+ bit crushed drums
+ same asian samples, only 2 times faster
+ amen break
+ more amen break
+ tramen break w/ distortion
+ sub bass
+ random shitty stretched and granulated field recordings
fuck about on alchemy presets by loading said shitty field recordings in place of stock samples
be dissapointed at what i've created
stop making tunes for weeks
repeat.

1. First, I go online and start a thread about the music production process.

drums first

usually write as you would hear it, intro-breakdown-drop etc

tend to write and not worry too much about engineering until the bulk of the tune is down

1.Wake up with a tune in the morning, write it down.
2.Tune sucks - rewrite
3.Get feed back - Rewrite-
4. Hammer away at a tune during summer/free time for 16 hours of the day, eat, get ideas, take a shit. get back to work.
5. Sleep - relisten in the morning
6. learn more crap
7. go out have fun/hang with bros/family do w/e.
8. repeat more stuff
9.hammer away some more, hope you're getting somewhere without sounding like crap
10. re-release over and over till I get the sound I like after getting others opinions. realize that most of my friends say they like it and everyone else says it sucks. Hope for more feedback.

Sleep..

repeat from 1. if pass step 10...
11. Learn more, Broaden ideas.
12. Feel satisfied with a tune. release and have everyone say they like it, or a good amount of people which will happen one day...eventually.Then go back to the start.
