The only question is - can YOU DJ with VirtualDJ?
If not, fuck off - if yes, then keep rocking.
Why is there any more discussion than this?
Do People actually DJ with virtualdj?

legitimate points, but it's nice to have a bit of discussion on these subjects, sometimes just for curiosity's sake, just because you can't use the knowledge you gain doesn't make this a pointless discussionBrothulhu wrote:This should apply to all DAW arguments as well.Mad EP wrote:SERIOUSLY

Re: Do People actually DJ with virtualdj?
Thanks for responses guys! Interesting though, I mean mixing with it is easy and if I had a controller I could do super legit mixes. Only thing I am unsure about is that visual beat counter thing cause sometimes I don't know if it would be a bad thing to use it or not. I can easily beat count, I just find it distracting.

And analogue/digital, etc. As far saying 'x' is better than 'y'. It's nice to have discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of different options, though. Especially for people who don't know as much like myself.Brothulhu wrote:This should apply to all DAW arguments as well.Mad EP wrote:SERIOUSLY

Was about to suggest this. Just make sure your copy is legit or you cant have new skins/pluginsmthrfnk wrote:You can turn it off in a couple of the skins.Bassf4ce wrote:Only thing I am unsure about is that visual beat counter thing cause sometimes I don't know if it would be a bad thing to use it or not. theres more to it than "if you're good with it, then use it"
you have things like latency issues, what your laptop needs to be running, what soundcard you need, what controller is best, what software is best etc.....

It is actually that simple. If you're having latency issues then that seems more like a hardware issue. There are plenty of really good laptops out there that could easily handle the usage that is required for it. I don't think the discussion here is about the hardware. If you have a controller you like, if you have a soundcard that works and a laptop that can run it then I don't see how any of that is a question. It still comes down to whether or not you can use the software well.Nevalo wrote:because its not as simple as this.Mad EP wrote:SERIOUSLY

It's the same as if you were using a DAW. These digital dj programs all require learning. If you've taken the time to learn it and can use it well then there's no reason why you should have to change. Some may have features that others don't but in the end they all essentially do the same thing. Why sacrifice your comfort to look more "professional".
Now if there is an issue with not having a decent laptop to run it or a good controller then you might want to start looking elsewhere. It's become such a big platform now that there are definitely options that are better optimized. Whether or not they are actually better programs depends entirely on the user.

And if you rocked it - no one would care what you were using... they will just remember that you rocked it.
For my first electronic gig - before I started using Live, I did a gig using Traktor, DJ'ing my own tracks. And do you know what? It was a damn good thing I learned how to become a badman at home... cos the club's stage monitors didn't work, I didn't have an external soundcard... so I basically had to beatmatch BY SIGHT (using the visual waveforms in Traktor). Because I had practiced so much in preparation for the gig - I was actually able to do it.
Never slander the effort of becoming a badman with less than perfect means. It is usually what saves your ass when things go wrong (and if you perform a lot - it is guaranteed that eventually, things will go wrong).
*** oh yeah - after that first gig - I impressed the 'scene' enough to be booked for 2-4 gigs per month, every month for the next 4 years in NYC... so you know... it never hurts learning how to be a badman (regardless of the context).

Re: Do People actually DJ with virtualdj?
ok thats fine and dandy....
but usually if you get booked to 'DJ' at a club, you tend to use some form of decks/cd players (unless you've been booked for a live set [eg ableton]).
if some piece of nobcheese turned up with just a laptop & vdj, then it kind of defeats the purpose of even hiring a dj.... easier & cheaper to buy an ipod.

If latency becomes a problem, it will affect your performance. Therefore, your set will be bad, man. How does that not make sense?Nevalo wrote:are you dumb?

Agreed Traktor and Serato are both streets ahead and why they are both industry standards in clubs. I have seen VirtualDJ used in clubs, but usually more by people who just want to fade songs rather than mix. People who mix, glitch, remix on the fly etc tend to use Traktor or Serato. Personally, I use Traktor 2.5 and a Novation Twitch.mikeyp wrote:i beg to differ when it comes to them being equal. if you use them enough you realize there is a large gap between virtual dj and then serato and traktorwormcode wrote:Could swear I saw DJ Spinn using it before (but he also uses vinyl and CDs), not 100% sure but it looked like it to me.
I don't see a problem with it really, there's only so much virtual software can do when it comes to DJing, I think they are fairly equal and the rest is just a brand name/marketing.

Yes spinn uses vdj/mixx/serato most of the time, when you see him and rashad using cdjs or decks they are playing off of timecodes, he says its cheaper and easier to keep the 90 something tracks he makes a day straight)
Im at a party to enjoy tunes, not hobknob over what the dj is using. It took me many years of blehblehbleh vinyl or cdj to realize it, but yeah, fuck that, it doesnt matter.
What matters is bangin tunes, bangin flow, and hearing shit I wont hear anywhere else.

Buy an ipod. See if it has the exclusives spinn does on his software.Nevalo wrote:ok thats fine and dandy....
