Second year into a BA... honestly if you're thinking of doing one on its own don't even bother. Absolutely useless.

The only use they have is that they're very easy and broad, and it clears your time schedule so you can do shit on the side. I knew someone who did a BA but he was freelance writing on the side, and ultimately *that* was what landed him a decent paying job.

What are you studying man?


Dunno about others, but me going to uni has largely do to familial expectations/requirements haha, gotta do something I'm enthusiastic about otherwise I'm quite simply fucked.

what's edinburgh like for dubstep nights? i saw a poster for a soundsystem when i went for an open day so should be alright for reggae

Good range of bro and deep nights, a few of the clubs have good systems and anything hosted by the Electrikal sound system is going to be heavy

Am going into my last year at uni, parts of it have been good, parts been shit. I think most people that go will say don't bother because it's long but a degree is a degree and showing you can study at that level goes in your favour for future employment. Plus personally I just want a degree, regardless of whether it was a bit shit doing it! Depends what age your at too, can be an extra educational cushion before starting 'real' life and the prices have gone way up in the uk now, so lots of things to consider.

anyone have any experience of going to any of those places? kinda concerned about nottingham's bad reputation for crime and shit but it seems like it was really exaggerated by the media

senior bio major over here. would have double majored in music but performance is the only offering. that being said I took almost all of the theory classes offered and my last three semesters I'm getting credit for producing in an independent study with my theory prof . the first semester I did it (spring last year) my tunes were pretty shit and way over complicated but this semester's off to a good start!

Just finished my degree there this summer, best 3 years of my life!

And yes it's true that you get to meet Patrick Stewart when you graduate haha

I quite like not being totally restricted to taking one subject. I know I'll always make tunes, but I don't know that I'll always want to study it, particularly at the start of the course when half the peeps there are completely new and I've got fuck all to do.

Also, general music tech student question, is everyone on those courses already into production? How were your experiences with this?

I'm doing English and History as Double Majors... neither of which can land you a job other than teaching or academics realistically. You'd need at least post-grad study for them to be useful anyway, and the difficulty with post-grad in NZ now is that the government is refusing to give monetary support to post-grad study.

Sounds like every Uni student out there basically.

Well from what I gather from friends having done Music tech at specialised colleges/the uni I'm at you'll find music tech fucking easy as shit if you're even half-good at production, assuming if the course you're on focused specifically on music production. My mate did his first year at a music tech school and told me straight-up that I would find it "too easy" - and it was only *this* year that I even started to take production more seriously. The rate of learning is amazingly slow.

Seriously, I stumbled into a second year music class once and they were learning the basics of Logic. Albeit in a nice studio, which I suppose makes up for it. One of the people I talked to from that class was only just learning how to operate a subtractive synth for the first time.

Also you have to assume that out of every first year course there'll be quite a few "jumpers" - people that bounce around different courses trying to find their personal niche, and this'll be especially true of any music course. People I've talked to jokingly say that every singer in their vocal course wants to be Beyonce - not all will share the same tastes you do and you might be banging your head against a wall at how silly/generic some people get even if they're a bit more serious than the average lot.

Not trying to discourage you in any way... I'm sure once you get to the more specialised courses that's where it'd get more interesting and the people that actually enjoy music tech begin to stand out.

And obviously in NZ we have a completely different culture though I'm certain that some things will be similar in the US. I definitely enjoyed my Uni first year and how relaxed everything was, so I'm certain regardless of whatever you'll take, if you go into a big city Uni like I did you'll find like-minded people even if they might not be specifically Uni folk. As long as you meet the right people since that's what made Uni for me, at least.

Last year at school as a psychology major. You get out of it what you put into it, regardless of your major. My roommate is a media arts major and loves what she's into, has had some internships, has contacts in the field, and a decent understanding of what she wants to do when she graduates. Me on the other hand.. I coasted by doing as little work as possible giving fuck all about school because I found it all pretty boring, and i'll be graduating with literally just a piece of paper saying I made it through 4 years of school. Study something your interested in because you'll take necessary steps to get you to where you want to be, there are insane amounts of resources for your at college if you actually take advantage of them

Also adding on what Huts has said plenty of any college's resources (libraries, computers, students doing specialised degrees) aren't barred to you just because you do one specific degree so get in on that. Especially if you're in the same situation I'm in - i.e. FUCKED. It pays to have connections

...but really for those thinking about going to university in edinburgh, the club scene is pretty shit! you'd be much better in glasgow if your looking for a decent dance/electronic scene. theres a good brostep scene there if your into that lol, the only semi decent dubstep nite at bongo club stopped recently (bongo club is a good club in general though but it mite be closing v. soon ) and sometimes some good djs are on about the city but not the same frequency that there is in glasgow.

Well I'm probably motte person to ask because on average living up here is more expensive than any other part of the country.... But if your just going for school than I guess you'll be fine anywhere..
