the bass line in this tune amazing, i thought it was a 808 conga and a sub layerd and destorted slightly, i was wrong. any ideas on how this is done?

cool song, there is barely any formant there though. create the pad sound and mess with ableton's autofilter, sounds like a bandpass sweeping the high end. but just a very light bandpass, dont want to do too steep of a cut.

Open up your synth, turn on two oscillators, set them to sine wave, set first one pitch to something around sub, then set second one's pitch 4 octaves higher. Turn down volume of the sub. Apply shitload of distortion. It will sound like the high pitch synth from internet friends, but you can play around with waveforms, different distortion effects and you will get something more close to that song.

i absolutely adore this tune.

by bassline do you mean the percussive part? if not, it's literally just a sub. the "wobbling" part is a 2 detuned square wave's layered with white noise + LFO.

as for the percussion/melody thing, i'm terrible with percussion instruments and usually end up calling everything a bongo but i'd really like to know.

I've tried so hard to recreate this formant/guitar lead, it has a very metallic texture to it with a high frequency range. I remember having a preset that was close to it but I accidentally dumped a boat load of folders that had it :(
I tried both massive and fm8 to recreate but all I end up with are your typical sounds, Im sure it has to do with ratios and oscillator modulation in fm8 but I could be wrong.
Btw the sound is at exactly 0:58
I'm sure anyone who likes the song 'right in' by skrillex will instantly recognize the sound (Not a bass/growl) I'm taking about it. It sounds very formanty and such but I could be wrong in everything

Sup DSF, fairly sure someone will know how to get this sound as it's probably an old school technique, hear it a lot in Jungle, Fidget house and some weirder dubstep stuff.I'm fairly good at getting all this vowely growly shite but i want to get this sexy wobble figured out!

It's a very smooth 'bubbly' wobble. Fairly sure there's a lot of pitch modulation and chopping involved to get some of the sounds in these examples, but just some basic help on which waveforms are being used here. It sounds so smooth, like the LFO is a sine wave but yeah, check these examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJrv04sGjss 1:28 into this one, the very wet wub.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9saYFJHdPY 1:22 into this one (think this one has a bit of a higher resonance, sounds wetter and wubblier..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3qfhTTJJCU Pretty much all the sounds in this would be awesome. 55 seconds onwards etc.

I dont know how it sounds so smooth and wobbly? Any pointers? Does resonance play a part? Any advice would be stellar! :W: Thanks in advance!

Not sure if its the same sound but I'd like anybodys ideas on the lead that kicks in at 0:27.

Sounds like de-tuned saws to me, like very de-tuned but not to the point where it's a semitone higher or lower but close to half (50 cents) with slow lfo or envelope of vibrato to create extra movement in your pitch, I've also JUST realized the hoover sound in the drop is actually that lead you want just without the pitch envelope that is creating the hoover effect, I'm guessing they had a macro set up to twist the synth into different sounds (multisynths). Btw it isn't the same sound, it's that very high pitched guitar sound that only plays one key throughout the track every 2 bars on the drop, but yeah bro, that's what it just sounds like to me, maybe an additive formant oscillator would help create another gritty layer on it, but if you noticed where the lead begins then the drop comes you'll notice a huge similarity of that lead to the hoover in the drop, maybe try recreating that hoover first, then simply get rid of the pitch envelope creating that moombah/hoover effect

Post by NITEMERE » Tue Oct 16, 2012 11:38 pm

Hey guys new to the forum and I was wondering if anyone could help me recreate a similar sound to the high synth at around 0:42 it comes in at
It would be great if someone could tell me how to replicate this on either Massive or FM8 whichevers easiest, thanks in advance.

Gave it a try, here's what I got:

Soundcloud

And here's how I made it:

OSC1: Inharmonic - Formant
WT-POS: 2:30
Pitch: 0.00
Intensity: all the way left
Amp: about 1:30
LFO 5 is routed to the pitch at 0.20. I'll go over LFO 5 later.

OSC2: Squ-Sw1 - Spectrum
WT-POS: 1:00
Pitch: -40.00
Intensity: all the way right
Amp: all the way right

OSC3: Squ-Sw1 - Spectrum
WT-POS: all the way right
Pitch: 0.00
Intensity: all the way right
Amp: 3:00
LFO 5 is also routed to the pitch at 0.20 here.

MOD-OSC
Turn the Phase on to 1
Bring the Phase knob up just past 9:00
Route LFO 5 to the pitch of the Mod-Osc at 0.20.

Insert 1: Parabolic Shaper
Dry/Wet: 1:30
Drive: Just below 3:00

FX1: Tele Tube
Dry/Wet: 12:00
Drive: 1:00

FX2: Reverb
Dry/Wet: 9:00
Size: 11:00
Density: just past 12:00
Color: 2:00

Now go to the "Voicing" tab.
Turn the Unisono up to 2.
Turn on Pitch Cutoff
Move the Pitch Cutoff slider about 3 ticks to the right. (very little, just so it detunes a bit and adds some movement)

While you're on the Voicing tab, click the box next to "Monophon" and the box next to "Legato".

Now go to the "OSC" tab.
Click the box that says "Restart via Gate".
Set the Glide Time to a tiny bit past 12:00.

Last thing, go to the LFO5 tab and bump the rate up until it's almost all the way to the right. This will give the high saw wave and inharmonic wave a dirty/gritty sound.

That should be it! Let me know if you're having trouble.

Does anyone know how to get it sounding a bit crisper up higher? like in Nuclear by Zomboy? And nobod tell me that he sampled it. I honestly don't care if he did.

What the fuck would sampling even have to do with sound design. It wouldn't change how the synth sounded. To make anything crispier just mess around with boosting the highs.

I'm not exactly sure, I can't say I do it. Anyway it's not something that can be done just be EQing.

Although he did do the bass cannon remix, so he could have morphed that sound...

Can anyone help me make this sexy reese?

Sounds like saws detuned with comb filter and a little phaser and flanger, but I wanna know how to get that nice crunch in the top end.

Maybe exciter philter?

Sounds like its just basic massive and camelphat but It's hard for me to make it right on point.

Help would be much appreciated.

Oh fuck off, he didn't sample the lead in nuclear, anyone could hear that. He IS a real producer, I'm pretty sure he can come up with a basic lead sound...

It's simple synthesis. Pure sine waves through heavy distortion gives you a nice crisp screech that's sounds a lot fuller than a lot of the other waveforms, try two of 'em a couple octaves apart and then distorting it with a parabolic/sine shaper or something. Scream filter with cutoff all the way up will sound good too if you're using massive, just tweak the scream and reso until you get good tone. Boosting the highs isn't going to do a thing if the core sound is bad so screw that until it sounds good already.

Also what gives the character to the sound in nuclear is of course the vibrato. Makes a lot of difference in making the sound seem organic. Try putting an envelope on it instead of a fixed rate, sounds pretty cool.

How do you get that ambient emotional synth sound?

Post by DJFlow » Thu Oct 18, 2012 6:36 pm

Every time I mess around with a synth I end up getting some robotic heavy metal dubstep sound but I'm trying to get a more uplifting sound like Promises by Skrillex I love the bipolar element to his music. Any useful VSTs or advice?
