where as there is a certain amount / type of pretension in k-punk's blog, i don't think it is fair to call him a 'clueless fuck', which he is quite clearly not.Paulie wrote: But K-Punk is a clueless fuck, as demonstrated ad infinitum on Dissensus/his incredibly pretentious blog/etc/etc...
the best thing about blogging as an emerging media is the range of approaches and opinions it presents the reader with. from the hyper-intellectualised k-punk to the punchy, humorous prancehall and everything in between; you don't have to read what you don't like but i for one enjoy the plethora of perspectives.
Prancehall's blog is witty and clever. K-Punk's is neither.boomnoise wrote:where as there is a certain amount / type of pretension in k-punk's blog, i don't think it is fair to call him a 'clueless fuck', which he is quite clearly not.Paulie wrote: But K-Punk is a clueless fuck, as demonstrated ad infinitum on Dissensus/his incredibly pretentious blog/etc/etc...

its a shame you call him pretentious just becuase he likes to use imagery-heavy language and reference everybody's favourite post-structuralists in every post. It positions him outside the scene, yes, but like Boomnoise says above its all about different aproaches.
And like i've said, I can see both Simon's and Mark's arguments about WHY they don't like the sound, they're both perfectly lucid about this, so I think their opinions are quite interesting

This k-punk sounds to me like a wanna-be academic... i got nothing against that, except when it slides to the levels of fashionable name- dropping (zizeck, haraway, the ubiquous french school, ...) an sich and the formulating of nicely constructed, still hollow phrases or inflatory concepts ("his crash ontology was the sonic fictional equivalent of the amen breakbeat in jungle, a kind of consistency-generating semiotic machine," could be one example). Typical for the cultural studies domain, which i bet he studied, and especially when it comes to deal with cyberspace. More an uninspired rechewing of the thoughts of greater minds -preferably by deconstructing them à la mode française- and failing to bring them to a plausible thesis in other realms.boomnoise wrote:where as there is a certain amount / type of pretension in k-punk's blog, i don't think it is fair to call him a 'clueless fuck', which he is quite clearly not.Paulie wrote: But K-Punk is a clueless fuck, as demonstrated ad infinitum on Dissensus/his incredibly pretentious blog/etc/etc...

But then blogs might be not so adapt for doing the contrary. Neither are internet fora, by the way.
if you weighed on fiddy you'd get your ass beat - by herboomnoise wrote:fair enough paulie - i respect yr opinion. i think it is overly convoluted and he stretches arguments to fit his perspective but still enjoyable.
no one has really weighed in for fiddy, or silverdollar, both of who i really rate.

well, kinda... he should know better though. Honestly, I am more than fed up with this kind of vapour theorists. Their eclectic style could be a praisingworty, but their lack of turning it into consistent and solid theories just frustrates me.boomnoise wrote:well, k-punk is an academic if that excuses him
i'm pretty sure K Punk isn't an academic, not by profession anyway.
and if he can't write from that perspective on the web, where can he write? surely this is exactly the medium for his blend of culture and theory? no one makes people read his work...

I was just hinting at my personal impression that reading from a screen rather don't than does guarantee a really profound reading. Unfortunately enough. But maybe you can?Blackdown wrote:and if he can't write from that perspective on the web, where can he write? surely this is exactly the medium for his blend of culture and theory? no one makes people read his work...
When you start logging your own progression in this or another theory, you may expect that you'd better write it short because the attention spans from the reader will be equally short.
If you want to deepen your point, I think you'd better opt for other (printable) media. If possible, of course, as you pointed out.
if you don't have the attention span to read k punk, don't read him.
i don't always agree with him but i defend his right to use this medium.
