I just use a chord generator and find myself some exotic chords I like. Then I write a simple melody based only on the notes in those chords and make it more interesting by just adding notes that sound good to my ear.

play your instrument. practice. after practice, improvise! or during practice you may drift off trail incidentally or purposely and come up w/ something that sounds interesting by error/intent. this has always worked by my experience.
