You can have an opinion on anything but you can't expect it to be valid unless you've properly explored the subject. Until then maybe it's better to keep it to yourself? I guess people will make that decision themselves, I just like to remind people of the alternative. Not that mr wub really went over the line or anything, I've just heard a lot of these arguments of said music being generic when there is dynamics to it some people might just not realise or appreciate.
calm down man that's how he always is.
he knows how every tune is made, that's why he's far more successful as all the guys combined that he sees right through.

There is nothing wrong with expressing taste when responding to a technical question, provided that preference does not detrimentally impact the response one gives. Whilst I did express my own opinion as to this producer's work, it wasn't the sole focus of my response and I did provide some more technical feedback which OP has given thanks for;

Again, my comments were not meant to pass judgement over an individual's talents and/or skills, and my apologies if it came across this way. However, it is my opinion that level of success is not a factor in passing comment.

Oh no I was thanking you for the technical advice haha, that's exactly what I was looking for, just small details like that which I hope can make a difference in my tracks.
It's true. Seven Lions could very well be a bedroom producer
with access to some very good synths capable of producing some smooth pads.
Personally, I really enjoy his music, his treatment of composition,
I feel it's different from most other chill-step producers and to my ear it's good.
I don't believe it's hard to produce sounds similar to what he does with a little patience and determination.
So, I'm going to leave this video I found here:

Edit: His best song:
How much white noise is mixed into that fucking hell.

You just ruined that song for me. Fuck you, man.

He builds a lot of chords/melody/harmonic content in his tracks. I like that. a lot. Perhaps why I love trance. There's a reason why there is chocolate and vanilla, we know this, we go over it and over it. Make the choice to be proactive, not reactive...smh...
Op made a subjective claim and people wanted to call it out with what I would hardly call objective points. But then again, in the world of 'music/art', subjectivity will always reign supreme. It's just about how many people can identify with what you're trying to get across. But then again, who cares, right?
To the OP: Seven Lions "smooth" sound comes from building a chord progression. Adding harmonic layers on top will provide accompaniment such as arps, pads, etc. A BIG effect he does in the overall vibe of his tracks is this 'swelling' thing...it comes from low pass lfos, volume automation, sidechaining, etc and again following the chord progression. Also at certain 'novel' moments introduces a chop with some kind of sound (call it bass, fx, riser, whatever the hell)...he produces with the "wall of sound" type of style much like xilent or adventure club.

I'm a huge fan of Seven Lions. I disagree with many people - his drums are very unique, especially his snare, compared to the snares you hear from artists like Skrillex, Sound Remedy etc. His snares are smooth compared to others which are more "sharp" and hard-hitting.
Also, his music is one of the most atmospheric I've heard. I haven't been able to re-create any of his pad sounds. Also, his signature sound, people may argue is just a supersaw, but I haven't heard a single song/artist who can create that supersaw as well as him.
Though I know you're a site troll, I will respond to this one.
When you have professional producers trying to recreate your sound and can't (or even try using your same chords, Mr. Sam Laxton, I'm talking to you), you know you're doing something right. So what if he has a specific sound? He knows what he's doing with it and he does it well.
