Sokurov's Russian Ark for example. That's one I intend to get around to seeing at some point. Looks interesting.

And for those asking this doesn't have to super obscure films that can't even be found with english subs, just one's you would like to champion that you don't think a majority would have seen. The fact people on here are into underground music suggests they're probably into more than just the latest Hollywood blockbuster sequel and the suggestions so far have been nice and varied :4:

I dunno, Human Traffic is great but I remember it was fairly popular, still is with certain crowds. One of the most quotable music movies ever made.
But on that same tip I'd say 24 Hour Party People was more underexposed and equally as good, better in some respects. Hard to top anything that has Steve Coogan.

A few war films mentioned on the first page, and I've mentioned it in a similar thread a year or 2 back, but Casualties of War is one of the best films ever dealing with war. Michael J Fox, Sean Penn, John C Reilly and more all directed by Brian DePalma. Just criminally underexposed. Powerful film.

The Thin Red Line as well, I think it's way better than Saving Private Ryan which usually gets mentioned as the best WW2 film.

Thin red line is very good...has tons of people in it too that are excellent...

Black book for me is incredible but I guess having worked in a retailer that sold films my understanding of underrated isn't the same as every elses here

Killing people with your dick has already happened in other movies but let's not get off topic.

If they'd focused more on character depth rather than gore serbian film couldve been great. I would still say its better than human centipede though, which isnt saying much i guess

Human Centipede is again more of an exercise in marketing a film rather than making a good one.

Probably the most visceral depiction of schizophrenia I have seen in a film. The sound design is top notch.

Misanthropic character study at it's best.

I had to come back to warn you not to do this.

Honestly, it's the most boring thing I've ever seen. When I read the blurb in the shop, I thought, a film about 300 years of Russian History, could be sick. But it's not. It's rartid man, purely rartid. Like, unless you have an expert knowledge of the last 300 years of Russian History BEFORE you watch the film, you're gonna miss out on so much shit. Like, apparently there's a scene that's about the museum director talking about making repairs under Stalin/Lenin (I forget which). You would never have known that though, it's about 20 seconds long and is just a dude whispering to another dude.

It is the worst purchase I have ever made, and I once bought my ex-girlfriend tickets to see The Fratellis.

Rope
Image
Two young men strangle their "inferior" classmate, hide his body in their apartment, and invite his friends and family to a dinner party as a means to challenge the "perfection" of their crime.

I really like this film but it didn't do as well as Hitchcock's other films partly because 1948 America wasn't feeling the homosexual subtext. It's made up of ten very long takes that are broken up by the camera being obscured by an object. This makes the film seem to be one long take.
As an aside, did you ever see the episode of Psychoville that was made as an homage to Rope/Hitchcock?

It's wonderful! I think it might be my favourite BBC comedy of the last ten years.
