A guy called gerald who was one of the people who made the 808 iconic stopped using the 808 both live and in the studio because of the limitations, he emulates one in reason.
How many variations of an 808 pattern can you get from the thing can can't be got from software in a similar workflow, a drum pattern can be imagined before being executed in a variety of ways.
The whole 808 buying thing is the artist trying to show they are a step above, it's stupid, it doesn't even have midi to sync for fuck sake you have to mod the things.

It's like an author writing a book on a typewriter because they get a different writing style.

The limitations are what create cool ideas tho

plus if you got the money, why not

why would you want to do everything on your computer. sounds dull as fuck to me

i rob my dads guitar pedals so i can have a bit more fun than just being stuck with my macbook and a midi controller

i reckon the way you approach things is a big part of the end result

I've seen A Guy Called Gerald live and he used both hardware and software emulations seperately. Obviously for different reasons.

The 808s sounding better than an emulation is a lot harder to prove but it's also true in my personal experience. I got a mate who owns one and hearing him play it in person it does sound pretty fucking good.

Still the working method is the undeniable obvious thing to note. I can't believe you could claim that a controller with a computer will yield identical results to a big table full of individually designed hardware and a desk. It's not that the rhythms aren't possible to program. Just you work differently. Since buying my Tempest I find I make really different beats on it compared to doing it in software.

Also working within limitations can breed creativity anyway.

No it doesn't

Have any of played a fucking musical instrument before? When you really know how to play you don't even play consciously most of the time. If I wrote music on a piano roll on a DAW it's gonna be a lot more of "can I make this melody" and bits of trial and error compared to picking up a guitar and being able to contiuously improvise without even giving a thought to where my fingers need to go.

Different ways of doing things when writing music makes different music. I wrote a 4000 word essay on the subject and wrote two versions of the same piece of music to demonstrate this at uni. I've experienced and observed it countless times.

Wolf, what mixer do you have?

Looking at getting one just to mix line devices and maybe 2-3 mics. Also debating whether I need it to send every channel to
the computer separately iow with a built in interface.

Nothing at the moment. really could do with one.

At the moment I simply have an interface with a bunch line inputs and a couple mic inputs. It works but it's not perfect. It's a case of having a workflow that involves switching between everything and piecing stuff together in software. I mean I write segments stuff being kind hands on/live with the hardware but in terms of then making a whole track most of it still happens in the DAW.
