The point is that in an ever increasing internet-involved society with more and more time spent at work we often can't avoid putting personal information on line. Match dot com or similar dating sites is a prime example. Couple that with spending habits, musical tastes, favourite films, philosophical and political leanings, trouble you got into as a kid etc. etc. etc. etc. and the government will have a nice little profile on you.
Now, with that information, who's to say they wont misuse it to
blackmail
manipulate
frame
extort
murder

Are there any search engines that you ninjas would recommend? I've been using Startpage a bit.

Like 10 or 15 years back that was their unofficial motto around the office. That was also before it was common for their average employee to be a millionaire and the company controlled most of the digital world. Power corrupts...

Some people who did not like what google had become quit the company and started up a great search engine called cuil, pronounce 'cool'. It was http://www.cuil.com but they got taken out a couple of years ago. I was using it regularly. It wasn't great yet but was promising.

TOR and Freenet are good, it's not all terrible content. There's as much legit stuff as bad stuff, and you can use them to secure yourself on the normal internet ('clearnet') but the problem is it's so slow. There's really no avoiding that though.

If you want to still use google, just secure yourself and your data. Anything you don't want logged or out in the open, use encryption. It's the only way really. Check out OTR/Off The Record messaging with a client like Pidgin @ http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/

Yeah but at the end of the day the internet is not a human right (idgaf what anyone says) so if you don't agree with the government knowing these things then don't put them on the internet. It's not like they are sucking these things from your mind, also wtf kind of example is dating sites you chose to put your information on them and when you do so imo you risk this information being used for different reasons as i am sure it says in the terms and conditions. Also how will they use information you have put on the internet to murder you? lol
