both really but shud be aiming towards riding the pitch

I think the key to touching a record sometimes is touching it at the right time.
With the sparse sounds of dubstep, u can normally just tap it and not hear it.
Just subtly sortof in time with the music....all practice tho rreally

Stuff like Cockney Violin tho...stuff with a constant mid sound...i cant touch it...sounds dreadful wen u touch it or Kode9 - 9 samuari

It might seem harder just using the pitch but if u practice enough...you will have tunes in every 32bars easily if u practice fuckloads.

I tend to mix at the same tempo everytime i play records.....i dunno what speed it is
......but Earth a Run Red @ +5 or 6%.....
so when i play out...i put my first tune against that at home then mix at that speed for the night...

then after time, u remember where tunes shud roughly sit...that way.....if ur playing out and the sound is GASH.....
and u cant hear too well and u look and ur like....wtf that looks way too fast....it kinda helps.

did any of that make sense :? probly not

lol

I learnt to mix with drum and bass about 4/5 years ago ...
AGREED dubstep has been much trickier to master, and if i would of started from scratch mixing dubstep i think i would of gone mental!

I know it sounds sloppy when having to use fingers in the mix (espesh with synths/string etc)

yea cousre i use the pitch! I jus mean, ive seen djs play that never touch the records and literally only use the pitch - if it needs speeding up they would push the pitch up alot and take it back down to jus above where it was befroe.... does that make sense?

The way i do it, is everytime i touch the record (speed up or slow down) i mirror this by adjusting the pitch slightly, untill its totally locked in the headphones and then bring it in..... normally if it then goes slightly out, pushing it so minor its hardly noticable....

Pitch mostly but I do use the finger to slow the record down, and sometimes for minor adjustments I push.

Mostly pitch when the record is cued (and sometimes push to win some time when I have to make major adjustments).
If the record is already audible, it depends; if I can anticipate it going out of sync in time, I use the pitch slider. If somehow I cannot anticipate it, I push (but if I think that the push will be too audible, I try to turn down the volume of the record I'm pushing during the push).
Hope it makes sense.

Usually do a mixture of pitch chasing and touching the platter/pushing. I find pushing can be a bit crude though.

I do the same, but how can you play so fast? Surely on decks that only have up to +8 pitch sliders you can't mix Loefah, D1 and Pinch tunes? I play at Request Line +2.5

I told myself about 6 months ago to try and learn using the pitch and pitch alone but quickly got hammered and forgot all about it. Cant really see the huge benefit to be honest.

Both!!

No matter how locked it is in the head phones, your always gonna need a bit of budda finger now and again.

Esp if you like doing long blends.

but it's hard (4 me) to come back from that "pitch trip" to proper value..
usually i mix just like Deapoh wrote, but it depends on my mood, on turntables, etc..

Only recently started pitch chasing, I never believed that it would make things easier but it does.

QFT, found it easier learning to mix physically touching the platter and now its a bad habit i cant get out of

If it's belt driven table - you have no options. It's all about pitch.

Direct drive - bit of both. Standard. :y:
